Letran, FEU spikers near Boracay berths The Philippine Star Abac Cordero
MANILA, Philippines - Reigning NCAA champion Letran flexed its muscles yesterday and notched a third straight win in the Luzon leg of the Nestea Fit Beach Volley National Circuit at the SM Mall of Asia Bay Area.
Eden Canlas and Joseph Erickson Ramos, barely a week after nailing the NCAA title, survived Gabriel Usman and Marion James Roa of Philippine Christian U, 21-17, 21-14, for a perfect 3-0 record.
Letran defeated the same PCU team for the NCAA title, and Canlas said this gave them enough cushion, and all the information they needed to pull off a similar victory in the Nestea event.
“We didn’t do anything new because we’ve faced them a few times in the NCAA,” said Canlas, so glad to have Ramos, the juniors MVP in NCAA beach volley, as his teammate.
Far Eastern University also remained undefeated and stayed on a collision course with Letran for the Luzon crown. The semis and finals will be held today at the sun-baked venue by the bay.
Seeking a third straight Luzon crown, FEU whipped Lyceum Batangas, 21-16, 21-10, for a 2-0 slate. If Letran and FEU win their morning matches, they get automatic slots to the Boracay stage on May 6-9.
“We’re two-zero but we cannot take it easy. We still have to win tomorrow to get to Boracay,” said FEU’s Joshua Alcarde who continued to squeeze the best from rookie teammate Jan Berlin Paglinawan.
Out to dispute the women’s crown are Letran, a 21-15, 23-25, 15-13 2 winner over San Beda Alabang; UE, a 21-7, 21-15 winner over UP; and University of the Cordilleras, a 21-14, 21-11 winner over St. Louis U.
Earlier, San Beda defeated St. Benilde, 23-21, 10-21, 15-13; NCBA edged Adamson, 21-14, 22-20; Perpetual Help Dalta downed La Salle Taft, 21-7, 21-14; and La Salle Dasmariñas nipped UP, 21-18, 19-21,15-11.

UE, Adamson lead beach volley winners March 06, 2009 Manila Bulletin
UAAP runner-up University of the East walloped University of the Philippines, 21-8, 21-15, to keep its bid alive in the Luzon leg of the Nestea Fit Beach Volleyball National Circuit yesterday at the SM Mall of Asia Bay Area.
Ginaflor Alanguilan and Abigail Escandor did not waste time in reviving their title bid as they peppered the duo of Pauleen Genido and Southlyn Ramos with heavy spikes to post their second win in three games.
The two easily won the first set but struggled a bit in the second set in the face of UP’s strong resistance.
Partners for three years already, Alanguilan and Escandor started their campaign with a 21-11, 21-11 win over Krissian Tsuchiya and Tamiya Joseph of St. Louis University in the opener last Wednesday but they ended the day on a sour note when they lost to Far Eastern University’s Anna Abanto and Marigail Tolentino, 21-15, 16-21, 15-13.
Adamson also made its presence felt as Angela Benting and new partner Lizlee Ann Gata massacred University of Baguio’s Armhie Macairap and Charmagne Jaleco, 21-4, 21-1, for their first win.
Marinelle Carolino and Gena Andaya of Letran College also sent a stern warning with a 21-15, 23-25, 15-5 victory over San Beda-Alabang’s Nicole Dela Cruz and Ana Villablanca.
In the men’s side, National College of Business and Arts and University of Perpetual Help bounced back from their opening day setbacks to stay in contention for a trip to the Boracay in May.
NCBA’s Salvador Timbal Jr. and Marvin Cortez defeated Adamson’s John Hendrix Compente and Christopher Achas, 21-14, 22-20, while Perpetual’s Joaquin Marcelo and Rainier Damian downed La Salle-Taft’s John Adriano and Philip Cerveza, 21-7, 21-14.

FEU spikers cop Luzon beach title The Philippine Star Abac Cordero
MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern U won the survival of the fittest yesterday when it forced Letran into submission during their finals match in the Luzon leg of Nestea Fit Beach Volley National Circuit.
Joshua Alcarde and rookie Jan Paglinawan of FEU took the first set, 21-19, and were ahead in the second, 6-3, when Joseph Ramos of Letran suffered cramps on both legs.
Ramos looked unfit to continue and teammate Eden Canlas agreed to give up the fight, and hand FEU its third straight Luzon crown before an appreciative crowd at the SM Mall of Asia Bay Area.
But despite their failure to finish the match, the Letran pair will still move on to the Boracay stage on May 6-9 along with FEU and third placer San Beda.
Adamson clinched the women’s title with a 21-16, 19-21, 15-12 win over FEU. Also making it to Boracay was the University of the Cordilleras, which placed third.
The Mindanao leg is set March 26-28 at the Tagum Beach Volley Drome at Rotary Park, and the Visayas leg slated April 16-18 at Parkmall in Mandaue City, Cebu.
The top three men’s and women’s teams from the Visayas and Mindanao will also make it to Boracay where the champion teams will receive P100,000 each.
Alcarde and Paglinawan made it to the finals following a big win over San Beda’s Leonel Laraya and James Lorca, 21-12, 21-17.
The FEU girls followed suit, beating Philippine Christian U’s Chona Cabaral and Dy-Ann Bisente, 17-21, 21-15, 15-7, in the third and last day of the Luzon leg.
Letran, the reigning NCAA men’s champions in beach volley, also advanced to Boracay with a 21-19, 21-17 win over Gabriel Usman and James Roa of PCU.
Letran skipped last year’s event but has made its presence felt this year, winning its first four matches in the men’s side before fatigue, caused by the intense heat, caught up with Ramos.
Also advancing to Boracay stage were Angela Benting and Lizlee Gata of Adamson, 20-22, 21-17, 15-12 winners over Cindy Benitez and Michelle Remo of University of the Cordilleras.
San Beda’s Leonel Laraya and James Lorca stunned the PCU pair in the battle for third place, 21-16, 11-21, 15-10. – Abac Cordero
