Metro duos picked in Nestea beach volley By Romina Austria Philippine Daily Inquirer
Defending Luzon champions Adamson University and Far Eastern University and reigning NCAA men’s titlists Letran College are tabbed as favorites when the 13th Nestea Fit Beach Volley National Circuit 2009 fires off Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Bay Area in Pasay City.
Back-to-back men’s defending champion FEU fields a new tandem in Jan Berlin Paglinawan and Joshua Alcarde who took over the reins of last year’s winning pair of Jerry Mabutol and Edjet Mabbayad.
Two-time defending women’s champion Adamson will field anew UAAP ace Angela Benting, who will have a new partner in Lizlee Ann Gata.
Carrying FEU’s colors are Anna Camille Abanto and Marigail Tolentino, the same duo who recently gave the Lady Tamaraws a second straight UAAP beach volleyball crown.
NCAA champion Letran’s Joseph Erick Ramos and Eden Canlas will carry the load anew for the Knights in the three-day Luzon leg where the top three winners in both divisions will go to Boracay on May 6 to 9 for the national semifinal and final rounds.
After the Luzon elimination, action returns to the Tagum Beach Volley Drome at Rotary Park in Davao del Norte on March 26 to 28 for the Mindanao phase. The Visayas round follows on April 16 to 18 at the Parkmall in Mandaue City.
The national champions will take home P100,000 each.
Foundation University (men’s) and Southwestern University (women’s) topped last year’s circuit.
Other participating Luzon teams in men’s play are NCAA runner-up Philippine Christian University, 2006 women’s winner College of St. Benilde, La Salle-Dasmariñas, De La Salle University, Lyceum Batangas, Lyceum Manila, National College of Business and Arts, San Beda College-Alabang, San Beda College-Manila, St. Louis University, University of Baguio, University of the Cordilleras, University of the East, University of Perpetual Help and University of the Philippines, the inaugural women’s champion.
Previous men’s champions University of Santo Tomas (1997) and San Sebastian College (1998 and 2003) are not joining this year’s tour.

Nestea beach volley elims on By Kristel Satumbaga Manila Bulletin
Far Eastern University and Adamson University banner the 23 participating teams as the Luzon leg of the 13th Nestea Fit Beach Volleyball tournament fires off today at the SM Mall of Asia Bay Area in Pasay City.
FEU, represented now by Jan Berlin Paglinawan and Joshua Alcarde, hopes to retain the men’s title won by Edjet Mabbayad and Jerry Mabutol last year.
Adamson also shares the same goal after the school ruled the women’s division last year with veteran Angela Benting at the helm.
Benting will have a new partner this time in Lizlee Ann Gata, who is also a prolific scorer.
Other men’s entries are John Hendrix Compente and Christopher Achas of Adamson, Gabriel Usman and Marion Roa of Philippine Christian University (PCU), Joseph Ramos and Eden Canlas of Letran, Dominico Lucindo and Mark Sagad of University of the Philippines (UP), Jerome Sibal and Renz Mabazza of College of St. Benilde;
Joaquin Marcelo and Rainier Damian of Perpetual Help, Rene Ali and Fernando Amlain of Lyceum of Batangas, Leonel Laraya and James Lorca of San Beda College, John Adriano and Philip Cerveza of La Salle, Salvador Timbal Jr. and Marvin Cortez of National College of Business and Arts, and Salanie Pajiji Jr and Alnakran Abdilla of La Salle-Dasmariñas.
Completing the women’s cast are FEU’s Anna Abanto and Marigail Tolentino, PCU’s Ma. Chona Cabaral and Dy-Ann Bisente, Letran’s Marinelle Carolino and Gena Andaya, UP’s Pauleen Genido and Southlyn Ramos, University of the East’s Ginaflor Alanguilan and Mary Abigail Escandor, University of the Cordilleras’ Cindy Benitez and Michelle Remo, St. Louis University’s Maria Tsuchiya and Tamiya Joseph, University of Baguio’s Armhie Macairap and Charmagne Jaleco, San Beda-Alabang’s Nicole Dela Cruz and Ana Villablanca and La Salle-Dasmariñas’ April Almaden and Jeushl Tiu.
Abanto and Tolentino are coming off an impressive win in the Petron tournament.

Favored beach volley teams prevail By Cedelf P. Tupas Philippine Daily Inquirer
Jan Berlin Paglinawan and Joshua Alcarde of Far Eastern University launched their bid for a third straight Luzon leg title by walloping National College of Business and Arts’ Salvador Timbol and Marvin Cortez in straight sets at the start of the 13th Nestea Fit Beach Volley National Circuit at the sun-baked SM Mall of Asia Bay Area in Pasay City.
The Tamaraws surrendered seven of the first nine points, before turning up the heat to win, 21-17, 21-16, in a high noon battle.
With the rookie Alcarde still adjusting to the playing conditions, the 21-year-old Paglinawan, back in the circuit since falling a win short of the national crown two years ago with Jeremy Pedrigosa, kept the Tamaraws afloat against the NCBA pair who upset University of the Philippines’ Dominico Ramon Lucindo and Mark Justin Sagad, 22-20, 21-11, in the first match of the day.
“I’m still adjusting because I’m so used to the indoor game and we only linked up last week,” said the 18-year-old Alcarde.
Letran College proved to be the most impressive contingent on Day 1 with victories in both divisions. Its men’s team of Joseph Erickson Ramos and Eden Canlas walloped San Beda College’s Leonel Evan Laraya and James Christian Lorca, 21-15, 21-15, while the women’s pair of Marinelle Jane Carolino and Gena Keeshia Andaya bested De La Salle–Dasmarinas’ April Almaden and Jeushl Tiu, 21-17, 17-21, 15-6.
In other men’s matches, De La Salle–Dasmariñas’ Salanie Pajiji Jr. and Alnakran Abdilla stunned John Hendrix Competente and Christopher Brian Achas of Adamson University, 21-12, 21-16, while Lyceum–Batangas’ Rene Ali and Fernando Amlain, overwhelmed the La Salle pair of John Rafael Adriano and Philip Cerveza, 21-11, 21-13.
University of the East’s Ginaflor Alanguilan and Mary Abigail Escandor pummeled Baguio-based St. Louis University’s Ma. Ai Krissian Tsuchiya and Tamiya Dawn Joseph, 21-11, 21-11, to lead the opening-day winners in the women’s side.
Also hurdling their opening-day matches were two teams from Baguio, University of the Cordilleras and University of Baguio.
UC’s Cindy Benitez and Michelle Remo thumped University of the Philippines’ Pauleen May Genido and Southlyn Ramos, 21-10, 21-12, before the UB duo of Armhie Macairap and Charmagne Jaleco posted a 21-18, 21-17 victory over SBC–Alabang’s Nicole De La Cruz and Ana Villablanca.
