Six teams led by defending champion University of St. La Salle- Integrated School (USLS-IS) will clash for the title of the 2011 Season 8 Shakey’s Girls Volleyball League (SGVL) Tournament of Champions which opens on Monday, April 4 at 8:30 AM after a simple opening ceremony at the USLS College Covered Court.
Roger A. Banzuela, former Philippine Volleyball Federation president and concurrent head of Beach Volleyball Association of the Philippines (BVAP) said the teams are former champion Hope Christian School (HCS) representing Manila; Pajo National High School of Cebu, Davao City National High School representing Mindanao, Central Philippine University (CPU) of Iloilo and New Ormoc City National High Schools for Leyte.
Angeles University Foundation (AUF), earlier reported to join from Luzon will no longer participate, Banzuela added.
Expected to grace the opening ceremony is Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) commissioner Chito Loyzaga. He will be assisted by Freddie Infante of Metro Sports, organizer of SGVL tournaments. Participating teams are expected to arrive on Sunday, April 3 at the venue.
Defending champion USLS-IS reclaim the title in last year’s national tournament in Cebu City from HCS. They hurdle seven other teams in Bacolod Leg elimination to advance to the SGVL Tournament of Champions here.
St. John’s Institute placed second, followed by St. Theresa’s Academy, St. Joseph School-La Salle, La Carlota City, Victorias City, Talisay City and Bacolod Tay Tung High School.
The former Palarong Pambansa titlist is the same team that won the secondary girls volleyball with a come-from-behind win against Iloilo Province represented by CPU two weeks ago.
Four players from other Bacolod leg teams will reinforce USLS-IS to defend their title.
The winners will receive medals and trophies and sports equipments for their schools.
