Shakey's g-league national finals Pajo belles seek to regain crown By Marigold P. Lebumfacil (The Freeman) Updated March 30, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0) View comments
CEBU, Philippines - Visayas titleholder Pajo National High School (PNHS) Lady Vipers are raring to strut their wares in the Shakey’s Girls Volleyball League “Tournament of Champions” from April 3 to 7 at the University of St. La Salle (USLS) gymnasium in Bacolod City.
The Fr. Rey T. Manayon-mentored PNHS belles are currently in the thick of torrid training for the nationals as they aim to regain the coveted crown this season.
“We have a daily practice against varsity players so that the girls will get used to dealing with hard attacks. So far, their performance is fine. They only need slight adjustments in terms of stamina and reception,” said Manayon.
Manayon expects tough opposition against Hope Christian School and host USLS-Bacolod.
“I always tell my players to aim high and bring their performance to the next level for us to succeed. More importantly, they should show teamwork because they are playing with some reinforcements from other schools,” Manayon said.
PNHS will primarily bank on first stringers in Gretchel Soltones, Marjorie Coloscos, Charlita Auza, Cristy Sucalit, Apple Roiles and Danika Molinas.
They will be reinforced by Nina Fernandez and Shyrra Cabriana from the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) and Julaiza Mae Larada of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R).
PNHS won the national championship for two consecutive years in 2008 and 2009 but lost it last year to USPF. (

Hope tames CPU in SGVL
Hope Christian School from Manila needed five sets yesterday to put away Iloilo City’s Central Philippine University in the Shakey’s Tournament of Champion at the University of St. La Salle College Covered Court.
Caught unaware by CPU’s aggressive play in the opening set, Hope fell back, 21-25, but managed to regain their composure in the second set as they lashed out with vengeance, 25-12, to even the scorecard.
But the Ilonggas have more tricks under their sleeve as they once again engaged the Manila girls to a tight battle in third set which ended 26-24 in their favor.
Refusing to back down easily, Hope dug deep from their experience and skills to spoil CPU’s party as they fought hard for a 25-22 decision in fourth set to arrange a final set. Hope prevailed in the end, 15-13.
Drained from their morning battle against CPU, Hope almost stumbled against Cebu City’s Pajo National High School in the afternoon’s last game.
With a dominating 25-17, 25-15 first two sets, Hope suddenly encountered a strong resistance from PNHS in the third set as they yielded, 23-25.
But the girls from Cebu failed to sustain their momentum as they committed several errors and defensive lapses in the fourth set, allowing Hope to prevail, 25-17.
Meanwhile, host University of St. La Salle cruised to its third victory against New Ormoc High School (Leyte) in three straight sets, 25-13, 25-14, 25-18.
The La Salle girls will face Davao National High School, which bowed to CPU in yesterday’s afternoon game, 24-26, 15-25, 21-25, 14-25, at 10:30 a.m. today, and will test Hope’s strength in the afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
The tournament will end tomorrow with the top two teams contesting the championship while the rank 3 and rank 4 teams battle for third place.*NAB
