University of St. La Salle-Integrated School defended its crown yesterday after a 5-setter game in the championship match against former titlist Hope Christian School of Manila in the 2011 Season 8 Shakey’s Girls Volleyball League (SGVL) Tournament of Champions played at the USLS College Covered Court.
USLS beats HCS twice in the tournament, one in the elimination and then in the finals on a come from behind victory with scores of 19-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-17, 15-4.
During the elimination, it ruled over HCS, 25-16, 20-25, 25-21, 25-13.
USLS’ Fritz Joy Gallenero was named “Most Valuable Player” and “Best Attacker” in the league while teammate Gizelle Jessica Tan was the “Best Setter”. Host squad’s mentor Malot Lozada was named “Best Coach” of the tourney.
HCS’ Janelle Cheng and Carol Cerveza were “Best Server” and “Best Blocker” awardees.
Pajo National High School of Cebu bagged the third place honor after winning over Central Philippine University of Iloilo in the battle for third, 25-23, 20-25, 25-15, 25-9. PNHS later won over CPU in a tight battle, 25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 20-25, 25-16.
PNHS’ Gretchel Soltones was named “Best Receiver” while CPU’s Fiola Ceballos was “Best Digger”.
Six teams competed in the 4-day volleyball tournament spearheaded by Shakey’s Group of Companies as its contribution to the sports development program of the country.*

PNHS bagged the third place honor after winning over Central Philippine University (CPU) of Iloilo in the battle for third, 25-23, 20-25, 25-15, 25-9. The six-team casts played a single round-robin with the top two teams to dispute the title. The 4-day volleyball tournament is backed by LBC, Toby’s Sports, Mikasa, Asics and Metro Sports, headed by Freddie Infante, with Johanz Buenvenida as tournament director.
