Saying the Philippines has assembled a “dream team,” Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Harry Angping expressed satisfaction at the lean delegation the country will send to the Laos Southeast Asian Games in December.
“I think we’ve come up with a dream team,” Angping said. “This is going to be one of the smallest contingents assembled, but one of the strongest.”
Sports officials announced on Thursday that the Philippine delegation will consist of just 153 athletes, the smallest contingent ever in the regional meet where the country achieves its best international record.
The athletes will be apart from the 47 officials who will accompany the delegation.
The total is far below the 627 athletes and officials sent to the Thailand SEA Games in 2007.
The leanest delegation before this was the 344 athletes and officials sent to the Brunei SEAG in 1999.
Despite the small number, Angping and RP chief of mission Mario Tanchangco are confident the Filipinos’ will deliver.
“As of today (Thursday), all bets are off. Let’s not talk about medals and predictions,”
Angping said after the PSC and the POC, represented by Tanchangco, agreed on the total.
Early this year, Angping predicted that the RP team can only win 15 to 20 gold medals in the 25 sports the Laos SEAG is offering.
But that was before the PSC and the POC assessed the results of the training.
“Right now they are all fighters. Malakas ang team na ito,” said Tanchangco.
Of the 153, :"kwondo will have the biggest number at 17 which will include the eight in the debuting poomsae event.
Billiards and snooker and sepak takraw will have 15 athletes each while water polo and boxing have 13 and 12 players, respectively.
Athletics has nine and golf has seven while six slots each are allotted for swimming, karatedo, tennis, and petanque.
Getting five slots are muay, shooting, archery and diving while four athletes may be sent by judo, pencak silat and cycling.
Weightlifting, wrestling, and wushu complete the list with three athletes apiece.
The RP team will not be sending athletes in indoor volleyball, beach volleyball, badminton, football, table tennis, and soft tennis.
