Montreux News from the FIVB Site:
Brazil reclaims gold at Montreux Volley Masters
Brazil were all smiles after winning the 2009 Montreux Volley Masters Montreux, Switzerland, June 14, 2009 - After sitting out the last two Montreux Volley Masters, Brazil picked up on Sunday where they left off in 2006 with another gold-medal winning performance.
Brazil won the 25th edition of the tournament by defeating Italy in straight sets, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23. In the bronze-medal match, China beat the Netherlands 3-0, 22-25, 15-25, 20-25, while Poland finished fifth with a closely contested 3-2 win over Germany.
The final pitted the two top teams in the world according to FIVB rankings. Brazil and Italy kept the crowds in Montreux entertained all week long with some world-class performances, and it was no different in the final, with both teams playing well in a difficult match whose score belied the small difference in quality between the two teams.
Italy lacked a dash of consistency and were ultimately made to pay for their inaccurate reception. They also sorely missed the great passing game of Lucia Bosetti, who was a force to be reckoned with earlier at the tournament before retiring with an injury.
The Brazilians demonstrated all their talent and were able to dig deep and overcome their rivals at crucial points in the match. In the second set, Brazil trailed 13-16 before storming back to win 25-18, thanks in large part to the introduction of Sassa and Thaisa. In the final set, Italy was up 20-12 and still wound up losing 25-23 as Brazil staged the most impressive comeback at the tournament.
It is evident that both teams are full of promise, especially considering the deep pool of talent the coaches have to choose from - 25 players on both sides are vying for spots on their respective A teams.
China, meanwhile, lost to Italy and Brazil earlier in the tournament but made up for it against the Netherlands in the match for third place, downing the Dutch in straight sets.
The Chinese put in a solid performance with a multi-pronged offense (13 points from outside players Juan Li and Yimei Wang in addition to 12 and 10 from the middle players Yunwen Ma and Ming Xue). Although coach Bin Cai's squad was helped by Dutch mistakes (17 errors in total), they were much more efficient with their blocking (10 for China against two for the Netherlands). Despite the loss, it was a good tournament for the Dutch, who finished in the top 4 for the second straight year.
Poland's fifth-place finish was its best result in its last five appearances at the Montreux competition. Nevertheless, the win over Germany wasn't easy for Poland, who were up 2-0 before the Germans staged a dramatic comeback to level the affair at 2-2. The final frame saw the score change hands a number of times until 10-10, when the Poles found another gear and cruised to a 15-11 win. It was the first time Poland ranked ahead of Germany since 2004.
With the 2010 FIVB World Championships scheduled for next fall in Japan, the 26th edition of the Montreux Volley Masters, taking place from June 8-13, promises to be one of the most important tune-ups for the world's top teams next year.

the three's names are not listed in the grand prix roster either. paula pequeno's is there, however. karpol, godina and gamova are in the line up for the grand prix, kaya lang mga twenty yata sila sa list. check out fivb website. of course, ma-tri-trim down pa rin ito so that could possibly mean wala pa rin silang dalawa sa official 14-man line-up thanks for the info! i'll be sure to check the fivb website. sayang magaling nga si paula pequeno but walewska oliveira ang jaqueline carvalho are just on a higher level skills wise! anyways brazil has a deep bench and i'm sure the other players will fill in for the absence of helia souza, walewska and jaqueline. good luck na lang sa newbies ng brazil-nt!

what is interesting about italy is that there is a complete revamp. si ortolani lang ang natira from the olympic line up. they almost did not make it to the semis in montreux, but they eventually made it to the finals. i hope to see piccinini, lo bianco, ferretti, etc. back soon though. :-D

right you are! i agree that they have a deep bench, pero ang concerns pa rin nila ay wala pa silang mahanap na halos kasing-galing nila fofão o fernanda venturini. their new setters are tall however, and they're almost as good as each other. one of them is ana tiemi takagui, a girl of japanese descent. bata pa siya and she's about 185 cm (about 6'0). (check out her photos--mukha siyang naligaw sa team brazil. hehehehe! www.volleymasters.ch/gallery.php?year=2009&offset=342 and by the way, if you're patient enough to view all the photos, you'll spot nikolai karpol, eugenio george and regla torrers ^^ ) anyway, it seems that the brazilians are getting taller and taller. paula and jaqueline...i think jaqueline is the better receiver and digger, but their coach is more keen to put paula in the starting line up. the three's names are not listed in the grand prix roster either. paula pequeno's is there, however. karpol, godina and gamova are in the line up for the grand prix, kaya lang mga twenty yata sila sa list. check out fivb website. of course, ma-tri-trim down pa rin ito so that could possibly mean wala pa rin silang dalawa sa official 14-man line-up thanks for the info! i'll be sure to check the fivb website. sayang magaling nga si paula pequeno but walewska oliveira ang jaqueline carvalho are just on a higher level skills wise! anyways brazil has a deep bench and i'm sure the other players will fill in for the absence of helia souza, walewska and jaqueline. good luck na lang sa newbies ng brazil-nt!

um, okay, but you're right. karpol's influence is far-reaching and i don't think it will go away for a long time. one thing that really stands out to me is why he switched to a more "primitive" style of volleyball when kirillova left his team (and their country too). i saw videos of team ussr way back when and i couldn't believe they were running a lot of quick and low plays and even some stacks. parang italy at brazil baga. ang ganda pa ng mga slide combinations ni ogienko. russia was "shorter" at that time but they were powerful and at the same time quick. when gratchëva/grachova came along, i think that was the time creative tactical plays started to be brushed aside, wasn't it? anyway, back to the grand prix...with the revamp of many teams, including brazil, china, japan, russia and usa who do you guys think will win? which teams and players (:-D) are you rooting for? i'll go for brazil, china and russia because i've always been a fan of their style of plays. i especially want to see ana tiemi and ooh-mama sheila from brazil, and the new opposite/utility hitter for china (which i don't know who) if she's almost up to the standards of zhou su hong. for russia, i want to see how they get by without their "pillars."

hehehe! siya nga naman. may brapanese models nga naman. but i'd just want to see how well she plays and how she blends in with the team. call me ignoramus, per ongayon ko lang kasi nakitang may gano'ng player sa brazil e. anyhoo, i think you mean carolina albuquerque. well, like what was said, coach zé roberto wants to try out the younger guys. fofão...hmmm...did she ever retire? ang alam kong nag-retire at bumalik ay si fernanda venturini. jaqueline...how did you know there's bad blood between her and zé roberto? i need to look into this. oh, my jaqueline...harhar! team japan...mukhang hindi tumagal si araki sa italy a. right you are! i agree that they have a deep bench, pero ang concerns pa rin nila ay wala pa silang mahanap na halos kasing-galing nila fofão o fernanda venturini. their new setters are tall however, and they're almost as good as each other. one of them is ana tiemi takagui, a girl of japanese descent. bata pa siya and she's about 185 cm (about 6'0).
