a! thaisa menezes is a young middle-blocker. maybe you're referring to marcelle rodrigues or dani lins? marcelle is older than carolina. dani lins is much younger. i think i've heard of that little tampuhan between coach zé roberto and jaqueline. i think that was the time na hindi na siya napipili sa starting line up, but they resolved it. that was some time ago though. there was a time when coach decided to drop mari from the team to give younger players international exposure. sumama ang loob nila mari at sheila raw, with sheila almost quitting. mari, of course, was never dropped from the national pool. it seemed that coach believed so much in her that he took the time to convert her form opposite hitter to outside hitter, even taking her and sheila to italy (team scavolini pesaro). he coached the team, while he also honed mari's floor defense. valeskinha simply has too much competition. fyi, she was converted from middle blocker to outside hitter, lalo pa't maliit siya para sa middle blocker, pero maganda ang floor defense niya. but on the national team, we have younger and taller players like paula, jaqueline, mari, natália and sassá (well sassá and valeskinha are as tall as each other, but sassá has a more wicked serve and is more well-rounded). in any case, she's made a lot of money playing in italy anyway. you'll find a lot of 2009 montreux games sa youtube. i'll post some links here later, if the mods would allow it. ana tiemi, little miss brap (who is actually very tall--188cm pala siya hindi 185cm. that's a little over 6'1), did just okay, but she made a couple of silly mistakes in one match i saw. china, meantime, did what russia and japan did--they moved one of their main outside hitters, wang yi mei, to the opposite hitter position, and they made the opposite hitter one of the outside hitters. when wang yi mei rotates to the front, she takes zone 4, not zone 2. the outside hitters meantime take zone 2 (i find this arrangement really awkward, but hey, whatever works). no new faces actually on their starting line-up actually (isa o dalawa lang). i like their setter, wei, but i prefer the old style of plays, with the opposite hitter doing deferentials, slides, double slides and stacks. hehehe! siya nga naman. may brapanese models nga naman. but i'd just want to see how well she plays and how she blends in with the team. call me ignoramus, per ongayon ko lang kasi nakitang may gano'ng player sa brazil e. anyhoo, i think you mean carolina albuquerque. well, like what was said, coach zé roberto wants to try out the younger guys. fofão...hmmm...did she ever retire? ang alam kong nag-retire at bumalik ay si fernanda venturini. jaqueline...how did you know there's bad blood between her and zé roberto? i need to look into this. oh, my jaqueline...harhar! team japan...mukhang hindi tumagal si araki sa italy a. yup si carolina albuquerque nga yun! yung isa pa nilang reserve setter si thaisa? she's there in the line-up for the women's grand prix. the latest news i got eh maglalaro si jaqueline for brazil sa grand prix. ang wala sa roster as si valesquinha, fofao and walewska. at excited na rin akong makita maglaro yung brapanese setter nila! re: jaqueline, i was referring to her and guimaraes-yun nga ilang games din sinasabi ng commentators before(in two different volley tourneys na di maganda yung relationship nya with guimaraes)

Here's a news clip from the FIVB site regarding the Cuban Coach Luis Felipe Calderon death.
FIVB mourns death of Cuban coach Luis Felipe Calderon
Havana, Cuba, June 18, 2009 - Luis Felipe Calderon, former head coach of the Cuban Women's National Team, passed away on Wednesday after a long illness. He was 57.
Calderon played for the men's national team in the 1970s before retiring and embarking on a coaching career with teams at different age levels. In the early 1990s he joined the staff of the senior team, a position he held until last year when he became ill.
Calderon shared coaching duties with Eugenio George when the national team won the gold medal at the "Morenas del Caribe" at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, third place at Athens 2004, and gold at the 2002 World Championships in Germany and Japan 2006.
His last participation in the sport to which he dedicated most of his life with enthusiasm and dedication came last year at the Boris Yeltsin and Pan American Cups in Russia and Mexico, respectively.
Calderon is survived by his wife and coach of the women's national team, Hilda Harry, as well as his daughter, Rosir, who is a standout attacker with the senior squad and bronze medalist in Athens.
Again our Sympathies...

okay. dani has been part of the national pool for about two years now. at one point, siya ang second setter for fofão, hindi si carolina. you've never seen mari play? in the 2004 olympics, she was the starting opposite hitter. in last year's games in beijing, she was a starting outside hitter. ah ok thaisa pala is one of their middle blockers. si marcelle familiar ako sa kanya kasi kasama sya sa brazil-wvt na naglaro dito sa rp nung last na naghost tayo ng grand prix. si dani lins ang never heard sorry. si mari steinbrecher never seen her play.

Results on on-going World League: From the FIVB site;
Brazil stands tall as only undefeated team in 2009 World League
High-flying Brazil is setting the pace in the 2009 World League Lausanne, June 21, 2009 - With previously unbeaten Russia and Cuba splitting their two-game series in Havana this weekend, Brazil emerged as the only undefeated team left in the 2009 FIVB World League after two rounds of play.
Brazil tops its pool with 11 points after a home sweep of Finland on the second weekend of competition, featuring 16 of the world's top men's national teams.
Pool A: The Netherlands solidified their position atop Pool A with two decisive straight-sets victories over China in Apeldoorn, winning Friday 26-24, 28-26, 25-20 and Sunday 25-18, 25-20, 25-15. The Dutch improved to 3-1 at the tournament while China dropped to the bottom of the pool at 1-3. Netherlands captain Jeroen Trommel said he was impressed by the rhythm he and his teammates have found. "We got into a flow and played like a machine. I think we were better in each aspect of the game. It was another step forward in our progress," he said.
The team the Netherlands beat in the opening match of the tournament, the United States, also won its two matches on the weekend to stay only two points behind the early pool leaders. The U.S. twice beat an out-of-sorts Italian side 3-1 in Italy, leaving the Azzurri in third place with just three points from its first four matches.
The defending Olympic and World League champions USA won their first encounter with Italy 21-25, 28-30, 25-21, 21-25 on Friday, and 19-25, 25-18, 22-25, 20-25 on Sunday. The USA will play its first home matches this weekend against China, while struggling Italy will play its first away matches against the Netherlands.
Pool B: France, South Korea, Argentina and Serbia once again finished their weekends with one win and one loss each. Korea tops the table due to a better points ratio after a solid 3-0 (25-22, 28-26, 25-22) victory over Serbia on Sunday following a 3-1 (25-14, 27-29, 18-25, 18-25) defeat to the Serbs a day earlier. Sunday's victory was the first ever for Korea over their European rivals.
Elsewhere, second-place France dropped a five-set nail-biter to Argentina in their first match, 19-25, 25-19, 25-22, 20-25, 9-15 but returned the favor on Sunday with a 5-21, 26-24, 19-25, 22-25, 15-9 victory on home soil. "We really needed a victory," said French Captain Marien Moreau. "We wanted to take 3 points but with 2, it's still good. We played well during the first two sets but Argentina then recovered their fighting spirit."
Pool C: All eyes were on Havana this weekend to see which volleyball powerhouse, Russia or Cuba, would come out on top of their double-header. In the end, neither did as the teams split the series, with Cuba winning the opener on Friday 3-2 (25-18, 24-26, 22-25, 25-23, 15-11) and Russia exacting revenge the following day 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 20-25, 13-15). Both teams agreed that Cuban errors made it much easier than it should have on the visitors in the second match.
"We played better tonight, but we benefited from all the errors Cuba made," said Russian captain Alexey Kazakov.
Russian coach Daniele Bagnoli issued a helpful warning to Cuba ahead of its upcoming matches against Japan this weekend. "Cuba has to play carefully against Japan," he said. "Cuba has a chance to play well overseas, but they have to work on their errors in order to improve their game."
In other Pool C action, Japan and Bulgaria traded 3-1 victories in Europe. Bulgaria was feeling confident after a comfortable 26-24, 19-25, 25-21, 25-22 victory on Friday, but were made to pay for their complacency two days later as they fell 16-25, 25-14, 24-26, 21-25 to the visitors. Things won't be any easier for the teams this weekend, as Japan hosts Cuba and Bulgaria visits Russia.
Pool D: After rolling over Poland last week, Brazil continued its domination against Finland, winning 3-2 and 3-0. The Finns gave everything they had in Friday's 25-22, 26-28, 25-16, 23-25, 15-9 loss, but were quickly disposed of by the South Americans on Saturday, 25-17, 25-19, 25-20. Despite dropping to 1-3 and the bottom of the pool, Finland coach Mauro Berruto was still appreciative of the way his team performed against the mighty Brazilians.
"I am really proud of the Finnish team," Berruto said after the five-set thriller on Friday. "We played a spectacular match against the best team in the world. We overcame many problems to play at such a high level."
Poland, meanwhile, rebounded from its two losses to Brazil on opening weekend to sweep Venezuela on the road in round two. The Europeans scraped out a 2-3 (25-21, 19-25, 25-20, 25-27, 11-15) win on Friday before cruising to an 0-3 (21-25, 11-25, 18-25) victory Sunday.
Results after Round 2:
Pool A
1. Netherlands, 3-1, 10 pts.
2. USA, 3-1, 8 pts.
3. Italy, 1-3, 3 pts.
4. China, 1-3, 3 pts.
Pool B
1. Korea, 2-2, 6 pts.
2. France, 2-2, 6 pts.
3. Argentina, 2-2, 6 pts.
4. Serbia, 2-2, 6 pts.
Pool C
1. Cuba, 3-1, 9 pts.
2. Russia, 3-1, 9 pts.
3. Bulgaria, 1-3, 3 pts.
4. Japan, 1-3, 3 pts.
Pool D
1. Brazil, 4-0, 11 pts.
2. Poland, 2-2, 5 pts.
3. Venezuela, 1-3, 4 pts.
4. Finland, 1-3, 4 pts.

Again from the FIVB site is the NORCECA edition for the World Grand Prix..
Trinidad & Tobago, Cuba score easy victories
Jalicia Ross of Trinidad & Tobago spiking against Guatemala
Havana, Cuba, June 21, 2009 - Trinidad & Tobago and hosts Cuba started with easy straight-sets victories at the NORCECA-F tournament of the FIVB Women's World Championship held at Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum.
Trinidad & Tobago swept Guatemala 25-22, 25-21, 25-12 and Cuba demolished Nicaragua by a score of 25-9, 25-13, 25-16 in opening-day action.
The Trinidadians relied on the power of their blocking as they outscored their Central American opponents 12-2 in that category.
Kelly-Ann Billingy topped the winning side with 12 points, 10 coming via spikes, while Darlene Ramdin contributed 10 points, including three service aces. Krystle Esdelle and Sinead Jack, who scored 9 and 8 points respectively, recorded three blocks apiece.
Cuba, the heavy favorite to win the tournament and the only ticket available to the Final Round in Japan next year, recorded 10 blocks and 9 aces.
Yanelis Santos was the top Cuban scorer with 14 points, including two blocks and three service aces. Rachel Sanchez added 8 points (all in the third set) and Nancy Carrillo had two aces among her seven points.
Francisco Cruz's team showed superior tactical and technical ability compared to its Central American rivals and also better physical preparation.
"I am happy battling at least for second place in the pool," said Cruz.
"We didn't work well in the reception because the Trinidadians' serves caused a lot of damage," said Guatemala captain Aneliesse Burmester.

Good Morning
yes, very much different...in fact sometimes the names of the different FIVB sanctioned volleyball leagues/tournaments are sometimes confusing.
There is FIVB World League (which is incidentally on its 2nd week), then there is a FIVB World Grand Prix, there is also a FIVB World Championships for both Men and Women (which are on round 2 or 3), and still there is a Grand Champion's Cup.
This is good. Many good volleyball to watch.
