FEU tows PCU, Perpetual to Boracay volley finals

Far Eastern University picked up the pieces on the final day to beat Philippine Christian University, 21-13, 21-19, and emerge as the top men’s team from Luzon in the 12th Nestea Beach Volley tournament.

Edjet Mabbayad and Jerry Mabutol of FEU meant business this time as they downed Jhester Tuante and Gabriel Usman of PCU before a cheering crowd at the Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park in Binakayan, Cavite.

The FEU pair took things easily and absorbed a stunning loss to St. Benilde’s Angelo Espiritu and Eddie Macdon the other day. But they avenged that loss during their semis showdown in the morning, 21-7, 22-24, 15-8.

After a few hours rest, Mabbayad and Mabutol returned to the court to stop PCU in the finals. FEU also topped the Luzon leg last year, then lost to Mindanao State U Tawi-Tawi in the finals in Boracay.

“Maybe it was meant for us. The loss to St. Benilde just made it tougher for us. But it made us work harder. We’re glad we still won in the end,” said Mabbayad, the top scorer in the recent UAAP beach volley season won by FEU.

The tall FEU pair advanced to the Boracay leg on April 24-26, towing along PCU and the Perpetual Help Daltas tandem of Aristian Sartin and Marcelo Joaquin, 21-16, 21-17, winners over St. Benilde in the battle for third place.

In the women’s side, 2002 Nestea champion Adamson beat FEU in the finals, 21-17, 19-21, 15-7. The two teams will also go to Boracay and represent Luzon along with Lyceum which defeated PCU for third place, 21-17, 23-21.

It was payback time for Adamson which lost to FEU in the women’s finals of the UAAP beach volley tournament recently.

Rizza Laguilles and Angela Banting of Adamson seemed headed toward a straight-sets victory, but FEU’s Wendy Semana and Shaira Gonzales refused to roll over and die as they tried to retain the Luzon title for their school.

After being dragged into a third set, the Adamson pair stepped on the gas, racing to a 3-0 lead, then 10-6. They wrapped up the match with a soft spike by Banting and the crowd that stayed on for the day’s final match applauded.

The Visayas leg, which also offers three slots to Boracay for the men’s and women’s divisions, will be played April 8-10 at the University of St. La Salle inBacolod City.

Mindanao teams already assured of slots to Boracay are Capitol, University of Mindanao Tagum and Holy Cross of Davao in the men’s division, and UM-T, Holy Cross of Davao and University of Mindanao Davao in the women’s side.

FEU spikers biyaheng Boracay

PINANGUNAHAN ng reigning UAAP women’s at men’s champions Far Eastern University ang anim na Luzon squads na umabante sa Boracay national finals ng 12th Nestea Beach Volley tournament kahapon sa Island Cove sa Kawit Cavite.

Ginapi nina veteran Wendy Semana at rookie Shaira Gonzalez ng Lady Tamaraws ang tambalan nina Dalhia Cruz at Syvie Artates ng Lyceum, 15-21, 21-11, 15-9.

Hindi nagpahuli ang power-hitting duo ng FEU na sina Edjet Mabbayad at Jerry Mabutol makaraang igupo sina Eddie Madcon at Angelo Espiritu ng College of Saint Benilde, 21-7, 22-24, 15-8.

“Gumamit kami ng matinding net defense ni Edjet (Mabbayad) upang makuha namin ang tagumpay,” wika ni Mabutol, na nagbida sa pagkopo ng Tamaraws ng UAAP men’s beach volley diadem noong September.

Sumama rin sa Boracay round sina Sang Laguilles at Angela Benting ng Adamson makaraang pataubin sina Cat Villaruz at Charmie Sanchez ng Philippine Christian University, 21-15, 22-20.

Bumawi sina Cruz at Artates sa ‘do or die’ semis match upang tulungan ang Lady Pirates na makuha ang huling women’s slot sa pamama-gitan ng 21-14, 23-21 panalo laban kina Villaruz at Sanchez ng Lady Dolphins.

Bukod sa FEU, umabante rin sa Boracay national finals na gaganapin sa April 24-26, ang PCU at University of Perpetual Help System Dalta men’s team.

Namayani ang Dolphins pair nina Jhester Tuante at Gabriel Umsman laban sa Altas tandem nina Arsitian Sartin at Marcelo Joaquin Jr., 25-23, 21-19.

Bumawi sina Satin at Joaquin ng Perpetual sa ‘sudden death’ laban kina Madcon at Espiritu ng CSB sa pagtarak ng 21-15, 21-17 tagumpay para sa huling men’s slot sa Boracay. Theodore P. Jurado
