Nestea Luzon volley elims on
Tuesday, March 25, 2008
After a short Lenten break, the 12th Nestea Beach Volley tournament resumes today with Day One of the Luzon eliminations at the Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park in Cavite City.
The dreaded teams from Luzon, including the reigning UAAP and NCAA champions, will see action over the next three days, each one hoping to advance to the Boracay stage on April 24 to 26.
The top three teams in the men’s and women’s divisions will earn trips to Boracay along with the same number of entries from the Visayas and Mindanao, which held its elims earlier this month.
The Visayas elims are scheduled April 8 to 10 at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City.
St. Benilde, the NCAA men’s defending champion, and Far Eastern U, the UAAP men’s defending champion, head the Luzon field. The two teams are expected to slug it out for the No. 1 spot.
In the women’s side, FEU is also tipped to prevail in the absence of NCAA champion San Sebastian.
Other competing schools from Luzon are Adamson, Letran, La Salle-Dasmariñas, Lyceum, PATTS College of Aeronautics, PCU, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Jude, St. Louis Baguio, San Beda Alabang, San Beda, University of Baguio, University of the Cordilleras, University of Luzon, University of Perpetual Help-Dalta, UP Diliman and Santo Tomas.
Mindanao teams already assured of slots to Boracay are Capitol, University of Mindanao Tagum and Holy Cross of Davao in the men’s division, and UM-T, Holy Cross of Davao and University of Mindanao Davao in the women’s side.
Last year’s men’s champion, Mindanao State U-Tawi Tawi, failed to make it to Boracay, fielding a new pair that failed to hurdle its tough assignments.
All teams that will advance to Boracay will be assured of prize money, with the winning pairs taking home P150,000 each, second P75,000 and third P40,000.
This year’s edition is sponsored by Havaianas, Speedo, Mikasa, Penshoppe, Tagum Beach Volley Drome at Rotary Park, University of St. La Salle Bacolod, Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park, Crystal Sand Beach Resort, Le Soleil de Boracay Hotel, La Carmela de Boracay, D’Mall, D’Boracay and Hey! Jude Hotel Resort.

Beach volley tilt resumes spacer
By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA
Far Eastern University and Adamson U aim to strengthen their semifinal bids today when the Luzon leg of the 12th NESTEA Beach Volleyball tournament blasts off at the Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park sandcourt.
The Tamaraws, then bannered by Joshua Alcarde and Jeremy Pedregosa, were ousted by the Mindanao State University Tawi-Tawi’s Yusop Abdulkarim and Gabshar Tahiluddin.
The women’s Adamson pair of Hannah Suarez and Rissa Laguilles, for their parts, fell short of their bid and bowed to Holy Cross of Davao College’s Carren Desierto and Dolly Peñaflorida in the battle for third.
The Tamaraws, however, will be parading with new players in Edjet Mabbayad and Jerry Mabutol where the duo hopes to make an impact in the competitive leg.
Other schools competing in the three-day affair are Letran College, College of St. Benilde, De La Salle U-Dasmariñas, Philippine Christian U, Lyceum of the Philippines, PATTS College of Aeronautics, St. Francis of Assissi College, St. Jude College, St. Louis U, San Beda-Alabang, San Beda College, University of Baguio, University of the Cordilleras, University of Luzon, University of Perpetual Help-DALTA, University of the Philippines, and University of Santo Tomas.
The second leg promises to be more exciting as most past champions in both divisions — UST, FEU, Letran, St. Benilde, Adamson, and UP — come from the region.
Three teams from each division will join early Mindanao leg qualifiers in the national semis set on April 24 to 26 in Boracay.
The men’s team from Capitol U, University of Mindanao-Tagum and Holy Cross of Davao College, as well as the women’s crew from University of Mindanao-Davo, UM-Tagum and Holy Cross earned their berths last March 4 to 6 at the Tagum Beach Volley Drome in Davao del Norte.

NESTEA Beach Volleyball spacer FEU tossers lead early winners
By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA
Far Eastern University opened its title-retention bid with a hard-earned 21-19, 23-25, 15-9 win over San Beda College yesterday in the Luzon leg of the 12th NESTEA Beach Volleyball tournament at the Island Cove Resort in Noveleta, Cavite.
The new tandem of Edjet Mabbayad and Jerry Mabutol needed an extra set to dispose of the Red Lions’ Christian Aguila and Leonel Laraya at the start of the double elimination round.
The victory denied Aguila and Laraya a double kill after taking the measure of University of Luzon’s Benigno Gil and Christopher Senizen, 18-21, 21-16, 16-14, earlier.
"Medyo nagkumpiyansa kami. Dapat sana ay tapos na ng two sets," said Mabutol, an NCAA champion with former partner Joshua Alcarde.
The Tamaraws were on their way to sealing the contest after taking a 20-15 lead in the second set. But Aguila and Laraya caught fire to extend the game.
Mabbayad and Mabutol reasserted themselves in the third quarter to finish off Aguila and Laraya.
NCAA titlists Angelo Espiritu and Eddie Macdon of College of St. Benilde shared the day’s podium with twin victories.
Espiritu and Macdon walloped University of Santo Tomas’ Jayson Ramos and Harbie Ilano, 21-13, 21-8, before squeaking past John Carlo Lozada and Froilan Pantone of Adamson U, 13-21, 21-17, 15-8.
PATTS College of Aeronautics’ Jeffrey Jimenez and Michael Valencia downed University of the Philippines’ Giancarlo Ramos and Michael Jordan Ardo, 21-18, 21-16, while University of Perpetual Help’s Aristian Sartin and Marcelo Joaquin Jr. outclassed De La Salle-Dasmariñas’ Jeoffrey Valencia and Joseph Rosal, 21-13, 21-23, 15-7.
Meanwhile, Letran College led the opening day winners in the distaff side after veteran Bangladesh Pantaleon and new partner Joy Caises defeated Karen Pis-oy and Stephanie Dayot of St. Louis U, 21-9, 21-10. University of the Cordilleras’ Cindy Benitez and Michelle Remo subdued St. Benilde’s Lc Quemada and Mary Cay, 21-10, 11-21, 15-9, even as University of Baguio’s Odessa Salomon and Augie Ancheta edged LM Rivera and Jean Rayco of St. Jude College, 22-20, 21-14.
Miah Manukay and Danielle Castañeda of UPDiliman clipped San BedaAlabang’s Maica Carlos and Raiza Sucaldito, 21-9, 21-14.
Three slots are at stake in both men’s and women’s divisions in the national semifinals scheduled on April 24 to 26 at the Boracay sandcourt.
Six teams from Mindanao, led by University of Mindanao Tagum, have already earned seats in the first elimination leg held in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.
The Visayas leg will complete the semis cast on April 8 to 10 at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod.
The event is sponsored by Havaianas, Speedo, Mikasa, Penshoppe, Tagum Beach Volley Drome Rotary Park, University of St. La Salle Bacolod, Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park, Crystal Sand Beach Resort, Le Soleil de Boracay Hotel, La Carmela de Boracay Resort Hotel, D’Mall, D’Boracay and Hey! Jude Hotel Resort.

SWU pair says UV is beatable
Cebu Daily News
With its recent string of success buoying its already flourishing confidence, the three-time national beach volleyball champion Southwestern University (SWU) is vigilant in its belief that it can topple reigning Nestea titlists, the University of the Visayas, come the finals in Boracay next month.
Immediately after its championship win in the inaugural Mayor Sun Shimura Beach Volleyball Open, SWU, which is bannered by the only three-time champion in the history of the event, Florian Gutierrez, and two-time finalist Janelle Tabio, boldly stated that it can take on the powerhouse UV duo of Jusabelle Brillo and Janez Armi Ygot and claim back the throne that they once proudly sat on.
“Kaya ra kaayo namo na sila. Naa man sa ilaha ang pressure kay sila gud ang champions,” brashly said the 24-year-old Gutierrez shortly after SWU’s win in Malapascua.
“Mapildi man mi, wala ra sa amoa. Pero makasiguro jud na magkalisod jud sila,” said the 23-year-old Tabio, who, along with former SWU ace and two-time champion Maritess Natad, fell to UV in the title game last summer in Boracay.
According to the duo, they have been preparing long and hard in their quest for redemption. These includes boosting their endurance by jogging laps at the Cebu City Sports Complex and practicing under the watchful eye of head coach Janeth Ponte at the Wiggy’s Beach Resort in Liloan.
However, for all their individual accolades, the pair recognizes that they still have a lot of work to do.

St. Benilde, Perpetual tossers hot
By Romina Austria Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 03:12:00 03/26/2008
CAVITE—College of St. Benilde and University of Perpetual Help soared to the early lead with two wins each in as many games Tuesday in the men’s division of the 2008 Nestea Beach Volleyball Luzon eliminations at the Island Cove Resort here.
Both squads needed similar two three-set matches to open their finals bid on a high note after missing the Boracay finals last year.
The five-time NCAA champion St. Benilde, bannered by Angelo Espiritu and Eddie Madcon, first bested University of Santo Tomas’ Jayson Ramos and Harbie Ilano, 13-21, 21-8, 15-9, before subduing Adamson University’s John Carlo Lozada and Froilan Pantone, 13-21, 21-17, 15-8.
“It’s still a long way to the finals,” said St. Benilde coach Parley Tupaz, who cited his wards’ two-year partnership as a major factor in their twin wins. “If we get another game tomorrow, our chances will be better.”
Perpetual’s Aristain Sartin and Marcelo Joaquin Sr. opened their campaign with a 21-13, 21-23, 15-7 victory over the La Salle-Dasmariñas pair of Jeoffrey Valencia and Joseph Rosal.
Sartin and Joaquin returned to pull off a hard-earned 21-14, 21-23, 16-14 decision over Harold Pavia and Michael Manuel of St. Francis of Assisi College, one of the men’s semifinalists last year.
The Las Piñas-based squad was on the brink of a straight-sets defeat when they fell, 21-20, in the second set. But a spate of errors by St. Francis netted them the next three points to force the decider.
In the third set, Perpetual came from behind anew, climbing from a 12-14 hole to claim the match.
Also scoring their first wins were Far Eastern University which turned back San Beda College, 21-19, 23-25, 15-9, and 2007 semifinalist Philippine Christian University, a 21-17, 21-11 winner over PATTS.
FEU’s Jerry Mabutol, a sophomore Sports and Recreation Management student, said expectations were high after their 7-0 title sweep in the UAAP.
“It gives us some kind of undue pressure, being the favorites here,” said Mabutol, who cited Adamson, St. Francis and St. Benilde as tough opponents.
Mabutol and partner Edjet Mabbayad are playing beach volleyball together for the first time. Mabutol partnered with UAAP Most Valuable Player Joshua Alcarde in the collegiate wars.
San Beda and PATTS were tied at 1-1 after wins over University of Luzon, 18-21, 21-16, 16-14, and University of the Philippines, 21-18, 21-16, respectively.
In women’s matches, University of the Cordilleras surprised NCAA runner-up St. Benilde, 21-10, 10-21, 15-9; Letran College bested St. Louis University, 21-9, 21-10; University of Baguio downed St. Jude College, 22-20, 21-14; and UP defeated San Beda, 21-9, 21-14.

St. Benilde stuns FEU tossers spacer
By Kristel Satumbaga
NCAA titlist College of St. Benilde stunned favorite Far Eastern University, 21-15, 15-21, 15-12, yesterday to remain unbeaten in the Luzon leg of the 12th NESTEA Beach Volleyball tournament in Cavite.
The two-year-old tandem of Angelo Espiritu and Eddie Macdon relied on their defensive effort to frustrate Edjet Mabbayad and Jerry Mabutol and move within in a win away from earning a berth in the national semifinals.
It was St. Benilde’s third victory in as many games after downing University of Santo Tomas’s Jayson Ramos and Harbie Ilano, 13-21, 21-8, 15-9, and Adamson U’s John Lozada and Froilan Pantone, 21-13, 21-17, 15-8, in the opening day.
"Mas nag-focus kami sa depensa namin para mas maging effective ‘yung plays namin," Espiritu, a 21-year-old culinary arts student, said.
Espiritu and Macdon, who only placed fifth in last year’s Luzon leg, fought back from a 10-12 deficit in the deciding set behind their brilliant blocking to turn the game around.
They took a 14-12 lead after Macdon blocked the attempt of Mabutol before Espiritu sealed the win with a whistling cross-court spike.
University of Perpetual Help Dalta also posted its third win as Aristian Sartin and Marcelo Joaquin Jr. downed Philippine Christian U’s Jhester Tuante and Gabriel Usman, 21-18, 23-21.
Sartin and Joaquin prevailed over De La Salle-Dasmariñas’ Jeoffrey Valencia and Joseph Rosal, 21-13, 21-23, 15-7, and St. Francis of Assissi’s Harold Pavia and Michael Manuel, 21-14, 21-23, 16-14, also in the first day.
Adamson, meanwhile, also kept its semis hopes alive by ousting San Beda College’s Christian Aguila and Leonel Laraya, 21-13, 25-23. The Falcons earlier bowed to La Salle-Dasmariñas, 8-21,18-21.
St. Francis of Assissi also revived its hopes with a 15-21, 21-14, 15-5 victory over PATTS College of Aeronautics’ Jeffrey Jimenez and Michael Valencia.
In the women’s action, Letran College clinched its second victory in the double elimination round as Bangladesh Pantaleon and Joy Caises whipped Maica Carlos and Raiza Sucaldito of San Beda-Alabang, 21-9, 21-9.
University of the Philippines’ Miah Manukay and Daniel Castañeda walloped Karen Pis-oy and Stephanie Dayot of St. Louis U, 21-6, 21-8, to remain in contention. They earlier absorbed a 21-16, 17-21, 15-9 defeat to Wendy Semana and Shaira Gonzalez of Far Eastern University.
Also bouncing back from an opening day loss were St. Jude College’s LM Rivera and Jean Rayco who beat University of Cordilleras’ Cindy Benitez and Michelle Remo, 21-17, 15-21, 15-13.
The event is sponsored by Havaianas, Speedo, Mikasa, Penshoppe, Tagum Beach Volley Drome Rotary Park , University of St. La Salle Bacolod , Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park , Crystal Sand Beach Resort, Le Soleil de Boracay Hotel, La Carmela de Boracay Resort Hotel, D’Mall, D’Boracay and Hey!
