ATENEO OPENS ASEAN UNIVERSITY GAMES VERSUS MALAYSIA
The Ateneo Lady Eagles will march Tuesday afternoon with heads held up high carrying the country’s collegiate volleyball pride against Malaysia to open their campaign in the 17th ASEAN University Games in Palembang, Indonesia.
Hard-hitting Alyssa Valdez will banner the UAAP defending champion Ateneo in their first of four matches in the regional athletic meet for college athletes held at the capital city of the Indonesian province of South Sumatra.
Game time against Malaysia is 4:00 p.m. (Manila time).
Valdez said that the team knows how stiff the competition is especially against taller and much more experienced squads from Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand but vowed to give a good fight and follow the “Heart Strong” mantra that gave the Loyola-based volleybelles their breakthrough UAAP title last year.
Though modest in their expectations, Valdez added that a win will mean a lot not only to her or the team but for the whole country. She said that a victory for them is like a big present under the Christmas tree.
“Siguro kung manalo kami ng kahit isang game mas maganda,” Valdez said.
Valdez is joined by teammates Michelle Morente, libero Denden Lazaro, Ella De Jesus, Aerieal Patnongon, rookie Bea De Leon, Gizelle Tan, Margarita Tejada, Therese Gaston, Julia Mokado, Jhoanna Maraguinot and Kassandra Gequilliana under Thai mentor Tai Bundit with team manager Tony Liao.
“We’re not expecting naman anything but we’re just going to play and siguro get all the experiences na pwede naming makuha,” Valdez added. “As much as possible matuto kami there and madala namin sa upcoming games namin sa UAAP.”
Ateneo left for Indonesia last Sunday, a day after the Lady Eagles closed their year with a straight set victory over the University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses as they roost on top of the UAAP standings with an immaculate 4-0 record.
The Lady Eagles will face Indonesia on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. (Manila time) and will have a rest day on Thursday before a scheduled 4:00 p.m. match on Friday against Thailand. Ateneo’s last eliminations game is against Singapore at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
