Organizer Tisha Abundo announced at the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum yesterday that Pangasinan should have been the third-leg host, but the typhoons that hit Northern Luzon the past weeks have devastated the province, rendering it ineffective to host the tournament. "We had no choice but to move the tournament to the De La Salle-Dasma sand-courts, which was one of our venues in the past," said Abundo. An equal mix of experienced spikers and new faces will fight it out for the top honors in the beach volleyball extravaganza now on its ninth year. "It will be an interesting battle among the veterans and the newcomers," said Abundo in the Forum held at the Shakey's, UN Avenue, aired live over DZSR Sports Radio 918 and presented by Smart, Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corp., Outlast Battery and Shakey’s. Last year’s runner-up Jennifer Manzano and Satchel Senupe are coming back to seek the crown they lost to Far Eastern University’s Shaira Gonzales and Shedd de la Pena in Lingayen, Pangasinan. Also trying to stamp her class is DLSU-Dasmariñas Iari Yongco, who will be reunited with old teammate Giselle Bembo. Together, they will count on their home-court advantage in a bid to make it to the semifinals of the tournament backed by Petron, Speedo, Mikasa and Molten. University of the East’s Jimberly Dizon and new teammate Jessica Paron will also be around, hoping to also reach the semis.

Abundo was joined in the forum, also presented by Pagcor, Outlast Battery and Smart, Dela Salle-DHS director James Antonio and Carrie Anne Costa, and the players from the 10 competing schools. Vying in the third leg are two teams each from Dela Salle, University of the East, Perpetual Help and San Beda Alabang, and one each from Philippine Christian U and Centro Escolar Manila. Abundo said the 10 teams will be divided into two groups, with the top two teams from each group making it to the crossover semis, and the finals. Because of the unpredictable weather, particularly in the afternoon, Abundo said action begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, with a total of 18 matches on tap, heading to the finals on Saturday. The finalists in all three legs of this Petron event that’s been going on for nine years now will advance to the Battle of Champions in Puerto Princesa on Oct. 11 and 12, coinciding with the birthday of Mayor Edward Hagedorn. Last year’s Battle of Champions runners-up Jennifer Manzano and Satchel Senupe are back to seek the crown they lost to Far Eastern University’s Shaira Gonzales and Shedd de la Peña. source: The Philippine Star www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=705597&publicationSubCategoryId=69&keyword=

source: www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=707020&publicationSubCategoryId=69&keyword=UE pair catches last bus to Petron volley semis(The Philippine Star) Updated July 17, 2011 DASMARIÑAS, Cavite, Philippines – University of the East standouts Francislyn Cais and new teammate Lorie Longalong quashed the San Beda College-Manila pair of Kimmie de la Vega and Debbie Dultra, 21-7, Saturday to advance to the semifinal round the 2011 Petron Ladies’ Beach Volleyball Tournament third leg at the De La Salle Health Sciences Institute here. After finishing Group B with a 2-2 record, the UE pair joined in the semifinals their fellow Lady Amazons Jimberly Dizon and Jessica Paron, together with defending champions and La Salle-Dasmariñas spikers Jennifer Manzano and Satchel Senupe, whose schoolmates Iari Yongco and Giselle Bembo also advanced to the next round of the two-day volley fiesta backed by Petron, Mikasa Balls and Speedo. Cais and Longalong banked on a higher tiebreak quotient to reach the semifinals after they finished tied at second spot with Philippine Christian University spikers Alyanna Marie Gorospe and Rose Beige Mendoza, and the team of University Perpetual Help-GMA bets Evarlene de Vera and Charlotte Diaz. With their backs against the wall going into their last game, the UE tandem picked up the pace against De la Vega and Dultra after their foes from San Beda-Manila took a 4-3 edge. A smash from Longalong and a pair of service winners from Cais touched off nine straight points for the UE duo, which grabbed a 13-4 cushion en route to the win. “We didn’t expect to reach semis, but we tried by stepping up the pace and it resulted in a rout,” said Cais, a marketing management sophomore. Manzano and Senupe had little trouble sweeping their four-game assignment in Group A, posting a 21-15 win over Centro Escolar’s Anna Chua and Precious Uy, a 21-14 beating of Dizon and Paron, and a 21-14 stopping of Perpetual Help-Molino’s Shane Collarga and Debbie Palma. Dizon and Paron, who finished Group A with a 3-1 slate, made it to the semis after they bounced back from their opening-day loss to Manzano and Senupe with three consecutive victories. Yongco and Bembo, on the other hand, also came away unbeaten in Group B, hacking out a 21-14 edging of Gorospe and Mendoza, a 24-22 win over De la Vega and Dultra, and a 22-20 triumph over De Vera and Diaz and a 21-13 conquest of Cais and Longalong. Champions and runners-up of the first three legs of the Petron circuit will face off in the Battle of the Champions this October in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, the perennial host of the tournament’s second and fourth legs.

source: sports.inquirer.net/7821/dlsu-d-pair-grabs-petron-volley-crownDLSU-D pair grabs Petron volley crownPhilippine Daily Inquirer Sunday, July 17th, 2011 MANILA—Jennifer Manzano and Satchel Senupe bested De La Salle U-Dasmariñas schoolmates Iari Yongco and Giselle Bembo, 21-10, 21-15, to clinch the third leg of the 2011 Petron Ladies’ beach volleyball tournament on Saturday in Dasmariñas, Cavite. The win allowed Manzano and Senupe, playing for DLSU-D 1, to regain a leg crown they lost last year to Far Eastern University’s Shaira Gonzales and Shed de la Peña in Lingayen. After Yongco and Bembo of DLSU-D 2 forced a 15-all count in the second set, Manzano and Senupe unraveled their power spikes, which forced their rivals into a series of errors. Manzano and Senupe then scored the last six points en route to the win that assured them an automatic seat in the Battle of Champions in Puerto Princesa City in October. They topped the same event last year. The winning pair, who won all their six games, will now prepare for the World Universiade slated August in Shenzen, China. “This tournament served as our practice tournament for China,” said Senupe. The 5-foot-0 Manzano and Senupe reached the final round after warding off University of the East’s Francislyn Cais and Lorie Longalong, 21-9, in the semifinals.
