Adamson tossers to play spoilers’ role spacer
Francis Santiago
With a nearly intact line-up and a national player as guest skipper, Adamson University plans to play the spoiler to an expected title drive by favorites University of Santo Tomas and La Salle in the fifth Shakey’s V-League which starts on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Falcons, who soared to their first V-League crown the previous conference by sweeping Ateneo in the finals, will enjoy a solid line-up although they will miss power-hitter Jacklyn So who has graduated.
"Right now, OK naman kami dahil halos buo pa rin yung team from last conference," Adamson coach Dulce Pante said yesterday, adding that some of her first six including last season’s Finals MVP Rissa Laguilles, Angela Benting and Michelle Segodine are still around.
"I think malakas and competitive pa rin yung team lalo na si Neriza pa rin yung guest player namin," said Pante, referring to national player Neriza Bautista who is set to play in the first Asian Beach Games in Bali, Indonesia later this month.
Bautista will not be alone in reinforcing the team as the league now allows each team to field an alumna for reinforcement.
Janet Serafica will fill up that spot to help Adamson’s back-to-back title bid.
Although former champion University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle University will return this conference, Pante, who steered Adamson to a runner up finish in the UAAP last season, believes they are still one of the teams to beat this conference.
"Wala naman pagbabago kahit bumalik yung dalawang teams (UST and La Salle). Dati na naman namin sila nakalaban. Sa totoo lang, mas magiging maganda yung liga kasi mas aangat yung mga laro," Pante said.
La Salle and UST, who split six titles in the first three years of the league, begged off from taking part in the last conference because of the tight academic schedule and a myriad of injuries to their players.
UST won the inaugural tournament in 2004 before La Salle scored a three-peat by ruling in three straight conferences. The Tigresses then completed a sweep of the 2007 season before Adamson won the crown last conference.
"We’ll be the same team that you saw last time," warned Pante, noting that the team will have its final stretch of preparation when it competes in the Unigames later this month.
