UST back in V-League
By FRANCIS SANTIAGO
Roll out the red carpet as three-time champion University of Santo Tomas returns to action in the second conference of the 5th Shakey’s V-League which opens Oct. 19 at the The Arena in San Juan City.
After a one-conference leave, the Tigresses are back and are ready to showcase their trademark games that made them one of the most exciting squads to watch in the biggest volleyball league in the country.
"Yes, we’re ready," UST acting coach Shaq De Los Santos said yesterday. "Okey na naman kami."
UST, one of the two most dominant teams in the league with three titles – the other being the De La Salle University – begged off from taking part in the last conference because of the tight academic schedule of its players.
With their absence, the league was left with only seven Manila teams and two provincial guest teams – University of San Jose-Recoletos of Cebu and University of St. La Salle of Bacolod.
Without the fancied teams, Adamson won the title after beating Ateneo in their best-of-three title showdown.
This time, however, UST, the 2006 UAAP champion, is bent on reviving its glory days. The Tigresses are actually the back-to-back titlists before the Lady Falcons copped their first ever V-League crown.
"Sana (we can win the title again). Pipilitin naming makuha ulit dahil marami ding umaasa sa team," said De Los Santos, a former national team member.
De Los Santos, who took over from August Sta. Maria who suffered a mild stroke several months back, said the team will be reinforced by former team members Mary Jane Balse and Venus Bernal.
Under the new league rules, a team can field in a former player and a guest player.
"We chose to have them back because they are the leaders of this team," De Los Santos said of Balse, who is a former UAAP MVP and Bernal, a former UAAP finals MVP.
Hard-hitting Angeli Tabaquero, however, will skip the tournament for personal reasons. But three rookies, according to De Los Santos, are expected to fill in the void.
As to the newly approved international rules and balls that will be used in the competition, De Los Santos said: "If we’re going to us that, we should also use the ball during practices."
The league, through its operations director Ricky Palou, on Thursday, said it will use the new-textured and low-pressured ball which has been approved by the FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) during its congress in Dubai early this year.
