FEU, SSC tossers are favorites

Far Eastern University and San Sebastian College-Recoletos loom as heavy favorites in the first conference of the Shakey’s V-League that kicks off on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan City.

FEU, which won the just-ended Season 70 of the UAAP volleball title, and San Sebastian, the NCAA champion, are picked to meet in the finals on the strength of their recent achievements.

Ateneo De Manila University and Lyceum of the Philippines coaches Michelle Laborte and Benjamin Mape noted the caliber of FEU and SSC, which earned their status as favorites following the withdrawl of defending champion University of Santo Tomas and perennial title contender La Salle.

"Of course they are the teams to beat because they are the champions of the UAAP and the NCAA," said Laborte whose wards made history in the just-ended UAAP season by barging in to the Final Four for the first time.

"Mayroon kasi silang hinahawakan na korona so parang they have to defend it here."

Mape admitted the two teams have the edge, but it doesn’t mean all other teams will simply fold.

"They are coming off championship wins so they are expected to do well in this tournament, but we will be prepared to face them," Mape said.

FEU head coach Ernesto Pamilar, however, downplayed their chances, saying the team could have been stronger if not for the graduation of its ace player Josephine Cafranca and the impending migration of star spiker Rachel Anne Daquis to Germany.

"Kulang na kulang kami ngayon ng players e, pero pipilitin namin," said Pamilar. "Lahat teams to beat. Kaya nga na-invite yang mga yan sa V-League dahil malalakas ang mga yan. Kaya mahirap magsalita. Hindi porke champion ka ng UAAP, ikaw na agad ang paborito,"

For his part, SSC-R head coach Roger Gorayeb said the tournament is a wide open race.

"Sa totoo lang, pagandahan lang yan ng gising," said Gorayeb, whose squad beat CSB in the finals to clinch NCAA’s volleyball crown last season. "Whichever team prepares will win it."

In the league’s first four seasons, La Salle and UST split the six titles at stake, winning three each, including a two-conference sweep by the Lady Tigresses of last year’s tournament.

But academic reasons forced the two champion teams to pull out of the meet two weeks prior to its start.

The league opens its door on Sunday with an opening ceremony starting at 1 p.m. followed by a double-header that features Ateneo vs Lyceum in the first game at 2 p.m.

In the second game, SSC-R and CSB renew thier rivalry at 4 p.m.

Also present in the forum are Adamson University and College of St. Benilde coaches Sherwin Meneses and Edwin Leyva.

They were joined by Shakey’s marketing director Meggie Jose and Sports Vision Management Group Incorporated’s Moying Martelino (chairman), Ricky Palou (vice president and tournament director), Nola Bernardino (director) and Chito Loyzaga (director).

The league will be rinforced by two powerhouse Visayas team — University of St. La Salle-Bacolod and University of San Jose-Recoletos — which will see action only in the quarterfinals.
