MANILA, Philippines—Newcomer College of St. Benilde will be happy with a top five finish in the 5th Shakey’s V-League women’s volleyball tournament which reels off on March 30 at The Arena in San Juan City.
Not a lofty goal but the Lady Blazers are aware that they are in for a tough time.
“Shakey’s V-League represents the cream of the crop so we definitely don’t expect any easy game,” said St. Benilde coach Edwin Leyva. “We are new in the league and entering the top five is our main goal right now.”
UAAP champion Far Eastern University and three-peat NCAA titlist San Sebastian College are the favorites after the withdrawal of last year’s double champion University of Santo Tomas.
The Tigresses cited academic pressures and the stroke suffered by coach Augusto Santamaria on March 2 as reasons for their non-participation.
St. Benilde lost to San Sebastian, which may bring in Thai import Jaroensri Bualee again, in last year’s NCAA finals.
Leyva said they will use the first conference to hone their talents and raise the level of their game for the succeeding editions of the league.
“Our games here will provide us the utmost exposure in order for our team to mature and develop faster,” said Leyva.
Benilde’s starting unit is composed of Doreen Sanchez, Kerlyne Mulintapang, Erika Calomot, Erika Yamaguchi, Kathryn Rose Pamintuan and LC Girly Quemada
Other members of the squad are Anna Katrina Maranan, Katty Kwan, Renilyne Kara Agero, Cindy Velasquez, Giza Yumang and Zarah Lasac.
Visayan squads University of San Jose-Recoletos and University of St. La Salle-Bacolod are also joining this year.
The six Metro Manila teams will slug it out in a two-round elimination with the top two squads gaining outright semifinal berths.
The remaining four teams will be joined by the two Visayan squads in the quarterfinal round.
A team which wins three of its five quarterfinal matches will earn a one-game playoff with the No. 2 slot for the second semifinal berth.
