THIS year’s 16th Nestea Beach Volley Visayas and Mindanao eliminations will be held on March 22-23 in Moalboal, Cebu.
This year’s edition will be challenging because the tournament will use the single elimination format. However, the International Volleyball Federation’s modified double elimination format will be used in the national finals.
According to Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) beach volleyball consultant Eric Lecain, this year’s edition is going to be very interesting as the teams from Cebu are getting stronger, including reigning national champion Mike Abria and Jade Becaldo of the University of the Visayas (UV).
“The new men’s team of Rommel Pepito and Relan Taneo from Southwestern University (SWU) will make the tournament more interesting.
These players have shown time and again that size really doesn’t matter in beach volleyball as they won the national Prisaa,” Lecain said.
Twelve men’s teams from the Visayas have confirmed their participation. Aside from UV and SWU, the other schools are the Bohol Institute of Technology International College, Foundation University, University of Southern Philippines Foundation, University of Bohol, Central Philippines University, University of Cebu, University of Saint La Salle School, University of San Jose Recoletos, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University and University of San Carlos
The other Visayas teams that have not yet confirmed are Colegio de la Purisima, Leyte Normal University and Eastern Visayas State University.
Meanwhile, Jovelyn Gonzaga, who won the national title for Central Philippines University (CPU) last year, won’t be playing but will be coaching Fiola Mae Ceballos and Valerie Jen Amar.
According to Lecain, this development will open the doors to many teams vying for the top spot in the women’s division.
“A huge door has just opened for all the teams as it seems national team champion Gonzaga has chosen to coach this year instead of playing. So teams like Danika Gendrauli and Raphril Aguilar of SWU and Apple Saraum and Rochelle Rica of USPF have a very good chance of winning it all,” Lecain said.
However, he warned teams should not be complacent.
“First things first and that is to get through the single elimination qualifiers in Moalboal. One mistake and you are just a tourist,” Lecain said.
