Shakey’s V-League: Ateneo nips Lyceum in three sets

The Ateneo Lady Eagles bucked a slow start to repulse a hard fighting Lyceum Lady Pirates in three straight sets, 25-23, 29-27, 25-17, in the opening of the 5th season of the Shakey’s V-League 1st Conference at The Arena in San Juan on Sunday.

Thai import Jindarat Kanchana led Ateneo in scoring with 22 big points including 20 off the attacks, to give her team a rousing opening win.

Team mate Ma. Rosario Soriano, who was named as best player of the game, also had an outstanding game with 17 points including three points off the block.

The Lady Pirates, meanwhile, was led by the 18 and 13 points of veterans Beverly Boto and Jane Kathleen Jarin. Guest player and former Lady Pirate Dahlia Cruz only managed to score six points for her team.

Lyceum had an early 6-3 lead in the first set but this quickly evaporated when Ateneo began hitting with their stride expecially on offense.

Ateneo coach Michelle Laborte said her team’s outstanding net defense and blocking also proved as the key to their victory.

“Aside from our blocking naging maganda rin ang adjustment ng mga bata sa defense ng Lyceum that’s why we were able score and pick up the win,” Laborte told gmanews.tv in an interview.

Next in line for the Lady Eagles will be the College of Saint Benilde who lost its first game against the San Sebastian (SSC) Lady Stags via three straight sets, 25-18, 25-23, 25-23.

The best player of the game was Laurence Ann Latigay.

Prior to the start of the game, a colorful opening ceremony presided the opening of the new Shakey’s V-League season which caps the International Women’s Month.

Among those who graced the opening ceremony were Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco and San Juan City Mayor J.V. Ejercito, who also acted as the keynote speaker.

Renowned singer Bituin Escalante, meanwhile, sang the national anthem.

Other VIP’s who attended the event include Sports Vision Chairman Mauricio C. Martelino, Sports Vision Vice President Ricky Palou and Shakey’s officials led by its CEO and President Leo Prieto Jr. (stonecold316)

Maswerte lang ang Ateneo dahil daming errors ng Lyceum but over-all they had a great game.
