Mexicans crush Beijing hopefuls Ilustre-Pascua Philippine Daily Inquirer MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines’ Olympic hopes in beach volleyball stumbled in the sands of Australia Tuesday. A day after the celebrated boxing team was shut out at the end of the last Asian qualifying for Beijing, Filipino-Americans Heidi Ilustre and Diane Pascua lost to a Mexican pair and missed the main draw of the Adelaide Open. Ranked 36th in the world, Ilustre and Pascua bowed, 16-21, 18-21, in 39 minutes to the 56th-ranked Bibiana Candelas and Mayra Garcia in the qualifying round of the season-opening leg of the World Tour, which awards points for the Beijing Olympics in August. Now the RP beach belles will have to do a lot of scrambling to make it to the top 24 before July and secure a slot in the Games. They have so far piled up 680 points based on the FIVB rankings and technically are ranked close to the top 24 because several countries have more than two entries in the Tour. Ilustre and Pascua will ry to finish no less than 17th place in the Shanghai leg in May. Marc Anthony Reyes

Soon enough, they'll be there na din on top of the rankings. Basta maging more intact at continuous ang training at exposures nila, they'll be a force to reckon na din in no time. Basta, All the Best sa tandem nina idol, Ilustre at Pascua! XD Walang Sayang sa Labang Pinaghihirapan

Hay talo naman sila sa Shangahi Open. Tinambakan nila ang kalaban sa 1st set then ayun bigla silang dinaga sa last two sets. I don't think that they will make it to the olympics. Wala na akong nakikitang pagasa sa kanila.

Ganda ng performance nila sa osaka open... they place 13th over-all, plus180 points din un sa ranking nila... gumaganda laro nila ah... compared sa australia at sa shanghai open na di man lang sila umabot sa main draw... at sa korea na 25th over-all sila... at least ngayon 13th na sila... thou malayo-layo pa ung hahabulin nila... ksi 710points ang meron sila plus ung 180 points so 890 points din un... peo ung hahabulin nila ay nasa 1400points so mga 510points pa kailangan... peo may 6 competitions pa ata silang sasalihan... at apat dun eh grandslam events which means double ung points at ung cash prize, kung ung laro nila sa osaka ay madadala nila sa mga susunod pang competitions nila eh may chance sila... biro nio they defeated higher rank europeans teams, wish ko nalang ang best para sa kanila...

F I V B FEDERATION INTERNATIONALE DE VOLLEYBALL PRESS RELEASE 28.05.2008 Philippines Pair Nets Women's Hyundai Open Barcelona Upset
BARCELONA, SPAIN, May 28, 2008 - Four seed-break-throughs highlighted play during the first round of the women’s winner’s bracket here Wednesday for the US$350,000 Hyundai Open Barcelona on the steps of the picturesque Plaça Carles Buïgas.
Posting Wednesday’s biggest upset in the the inaugural SWATCH FIVB World Tour event was 28th-seeded Diane Pascua and Heidi Ilustre as the Beach Volleyball team from the Philippines scored an 11-21, 21-16 and 15-11 win over fifth-seeded Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig of Germany.
After failing to qualifying for the SWATCH FIVB World Tour Main Draws in the first two international events in Australia and China, Pascua and Ilustre earned a spot in their third-straight “money” round Tuesday with a pair of wins over teams from Australia and Canada to earn a right to challenge the Germans Wednesday.
“We are just playing better and are getting use to the travel on the FIVB tour,” said Pascua prior to this week’s first event in Mainland Spain since 2002. “Playing in the qualifiers helps you get started each week, but eventually the number of matches will catch up with you. Since we had never played the Germans, I think we surprised them. They are a very good team with an excellent service game.”
With their win, Pascua and Ilustre will play the Brazilian Salgado sisters (Carolina and Maria Clara), who also won a pair of qualifying matches Tuesday to earn the 12th-seed in the inaugural Hyundai Open Barcelona Main Draw. The Salgados opened played Wednesday with a three-set win over a team from Latvia.
Twelve of the top 16 seeds in the Hyundai Open Barcelona protected their position during Wednesday opening matches in the winner’s bracket. Other teams making seed-break-throughs were the 20th-seeded Schwaiger sisters (Doris and Stefanie) of Austria, 22nd-seeded Mika Teru Saiki/Chiaki Kusuhara of Japan and 24th-seeded Simone Kuhn/Lea Schwer of Switzerland.
Host Spain posted a 1-2 match mark in Wednesday’s opening Main Draw round as 10th-seeded Nadia Campisi and Clara Lozano defeated a team from Austria to advance to match against seventh-seeded Vassiliki Arvaniti and Vasso Karadassiou of Greece, the reigning European champions and winners of a continental event last week in Switzerland.
Wednesday’s women’s play continues with both winner’s and contender’s bracket matches in the double-elimination Hyundai Open Barcelona. Twenty-two matches will be played Thursday with the first two qualifiers for Friday’s semi-finals being determined at the end of the day. Following Friday’s “final four” matches, the podium placements will be determined Saturday afternoon with the winning team sharing the $28,000 first-place prize.
The third of 16 double gender events on the 2008 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar, the Hyundai Open Barcelona’s men’s 47-team qualifier is being played Wednesday to determine the final eight spots for the Main Draw. The men’s medal matches will be played Sunday on the steps in front of the National Museum of Art of Catalunya.
The Hyundai Open Barcelona has started a stretch of seven-straight weeks of double gender competition in Europe through the Russian Grand Slam in Moscow the second week of July. Other stops will be in Poland, Berlin, Paris and Norway before the first SWATCH FIVB World Tour event in Moscow since 1999.
After a week off following the Moscow event, the SWATCH tour continues in France, Switzerland and Austria before breaking for the Beijing 2008 Olympics. The French event in Marseille concludes the qualifying process for the Summer Games.
The Hyundai Open Barcelona is also the 22nd of 28 Beijing qualifying events for women and the 23rd of 29 qualifying events for men. The Beijing process started in May 2007 to determine the 24-team Olympic fields for both men and women in the Chinese capital.
(btw... mali pla ko... nsa 850points plang pla cla... still mula 710 nagong 850...)
