Sandra Pires and Leila Barros seek a place in the OlympicsLausanne, 4 February 2008 - With an eye in the Beijing Olympic Games, in August, a new Brazilian Beach Volleyball pair has been formed. Leila Barros and Sandra Pires decided to add efforts to fight for a place in the Olympics. Not an easy task, as according to the country quota rules established by the FIVB, only two teams from each country can participate. Currently, Brazil’s two spots belong to world ranking leaders Juliana and Larissa, and Renata and Talita. Until the limit date for the definition of the qualified teams there will be 12 events of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour and Sandra, 34, and Leila, 36, need to be on the podium in, at least, eight of them, if they wish to grab one of the spots for Beijing. In case they make it, Sandra Pires will play her fourth Olympics. In Atlanta, 1996, with Jacqueline, she won gold and four years later was bronze in the Sydney Olympics, with Adriana Samuel. Leila Barros’ greatest achievements were in Volleyball: two Olympic bronze medals with the Brazilian national team. One in Atlanta and the other one in Sydney Getting in tune will not be a problem for the pair, as they played together in 2001, just after Leila left the indoor courts and moved to the beach. Now, however, Sandra has as partner a player who is more experienced in the game, having won many points in the world ranking during the 2007 season and, thus, both of them join the fight eager for a place in the Olympics. “Playing with Leila is an opportunity to get back to the international scene after being away for two years. We form a very competitive team, which has experience and determination as main qualities” said Sandra Pires, whose former partner, Virna, has other plans for 2008. “When we ended our pair, I didn’t think about playing the World Tour unless I met a pair which was really worth it. Qualifying to the Olympics is very hard. One place is well assured, and it belongs to Juliana and Larissa. It is even harder for us, because we will begin the tournaments playing the country quota (a preliminary tournament among pairs from the same country), then there will be the qualifications and, if we win, we will move on to the events. But we want to try”, adds Sandra. The team’s debut will be in the Brazilian Beach Volleyball circuit, which will take place in February, in the city of Porto Alegre. In the SWATCH FIVB World Tour, Sandra and Leila will take part since the first event, in Australia, from 25 to 30 of March. ----------- Leila Barros fans! Good News

New ball for the Olympic Games
A newly designed ball, with the same weight, pressure and dimensions but with a revamped technical composition that includes indentations on the surface, has been approved for use for the very first time at the Beijing Olympic Games. It was also approved to continue to test lower ball pressures (in Serbia, Brazil, China, Japan) to help increase the length of rallies, especially in the men’s game, by bettering players’ ball control.

The new Mikasa ball: technical guide
The new ball has been softened compared to the Mikasa MVP200. The panels shape has been completely redesigned. Cover material and the way of cementing carcass and panels have been changed: only line part, and not the complete carcass, is now glued.
The new ball was tested with the best available technologies by the laboratories from Mikasa. They report that new balls bounce higher with less impact-power (softer) due to improved constructions. Ball flying orbit got stable, avoiding sudden drop, thanks to new panel shape and cover material. Moreover, the new model fly stable with dimples on the cover (with panel shape change) and controllability when tossing and receiving was improved (found at field tests by Mikasa Corporation) with better gripping.
Two different designs were showed to the press and will be presented to World Cup teams, to ask for their opinion. One is similar to the typical Volleyball standard; one shows a more innovating look.

Leila and Sandra: ready for Beijing's battle
The will of playing the Olympics for the forth time brought together two winning athletes: Leila, 36, and Sandra Pires, 34, come back as a team, eying the Beijing Olympic dream, in August. Both admit it won't be an easy mission because only two teams will represent Brazil. At the moment, the spots belong to Juliana/Larissa and Renata/Talita. - It's going be a war. But since we are "hungry", we'll have a try. We have to reach eight podium placements in 12 legs of the World Championship to stand a chance - said Leila, emphasizing this may be her last Olympic Games in the career, becasue she thinks of retiring in two years.
Leila was playing with Ana Paula, but according to the player, each decided to follow their paths. Ana Paula must, soon, announce Shelda Bede as her new partner. As for Sandra, she was playing with Virna Dias prior to teaming up with Leila.
- Virna was going trough the adaptation process on the beach, because of this, we haven't tried to play the World Championship. So this is an opportunity to return - said Sandra.
Entering the World Championship's Main Draw won't be easy. Since FIVB allows only 4 Brazilian teams on the tournaments, being 3rd best ranked, Leila and Sandra will have to face the country-quota (along with the rest of the Brazilian teams) and, then, the qualification matches.
However, both know each other very well, since they've already played together between 2002 and 2003.

Indonesian beach volleyball team misses Olympics Updated: 2008-03-26 17:11
JAKARTA -- The Indonesian men's beach volleyball team will miss the Olympic Games in August after failing to play in the final qualification tournament in Australia due to visa problems.
"It's stupid. It's not the first time the Indonesian Volleyball Association has failed to arrange the visas," squad member Andy Ardiansyah was quoted in Wednesday's The Jakarta Post newspaper as saying.
With the team's absence from the Olympics, head coach Slamet Mulyanto said he would prepare the squad for less competitive tournaments in India, Thailand and Indonesia, starting April.

Volleyball adopts new rules
Two major rule changes in volleyball - the use of two liberos and low-pressured balls - have been approved by the world federation to raise the level of excitement in the game which has been lagging in popularity compared with other sports.
The new rules were adopted during the recent 31st FIVB (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball) World Congress in Dubai.
Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) secretary-general Otie Camangian, who represented the country in the Congress, said the new rules will be applied in PVF-sanctioned leagues as soon as the local federation meets to approve the changes.
"The new rules will really make a big impact in the sport. The rules will make the sport more exciting and we hope to draw more following," Camangian said yesterday after presiding over a refresher course for referees.
Compared with basketball, football, golf, among others, the game of volleyball has stagnated forcing officials to tinker with the rules especially in this age when the sport must be able to attract television audience.
The PVF, Camangian said, is also open to helping non-sanctioned tournaments like the NCAA and Shakey’s V-League to adopt the rule changes which he said will be critical to the continued development of the sport.
Among major sports, only the UAAP is being sanctioned by the PVF.
Camangian said the use of two liberos instead of one per team gives teams the opportunity to utilize small, agile players.
A libero is a player specializing in defense but cannot block or attack the ball when it is above the net. In the Philippines, a libero is usually the smallest player of the team.
"The rationale behind this new rule (additional libero) aside from giving the coach flexibility of having more defensive players, is to give opportunities for small players to play," Camangian said.
The rule, however, will not allow the use of the two liberos at the same time.
Camangian added the new rule on libero provides the 12-man team three options of reinforcing itself:
"Dati kasi 11 (regulars) + 1 libero lang. Ngayon tatlong options na, puwedeng 12 (regulars) + zero libero. Puwede ring 10 (regulars) + 2 liberos or 11 (regulars) + 1 libero."
Also approved during the Dubai Congress was the use of the new-textured and low pressure ball to increase the length of rallies. A low pressure ball travels more slowly than those with high compression.
The new ball will also have "dimples" like those in golf balls which will help handling and grip. It will make its debut in the Beijing Olympics in August.
"Mas magiging exciting ang mga laro kasi mas matagal ang lipad ng bola sa ere, ibig sabihin mas matagal ang rally o palitan ng bola," Camangian said. "This rule change is also in line with the FIVB’s motto "Keep the Ball Flying."

Philippines to host Southeast Asian youth beach volley c’ships 04/02/2009 | 02:04 PM Email this | Email the Editor | Print | ShareThis MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines will host the initial Southeast Asian Youth Beach Volleyball Championship, Philippine Volleyball Federation secretary general Otie Camangian said.
Camangian said that the Southeast Asian Volleyball Federation awarded the hosting to the Philippines during its meeting last January in Bangkok.
According to Camangian, Tagum City has already expressed intent to host the event with city mayor Rey T. Uy already indicating his interest to the Tagum Volleyball Association.
“Mayor Uy wants Tagum to host the event. We will give them the requirements for the possible hosting soon," Camangian said.
Tagum City has its own beach volleyball facility with the Tagum Beach Volley Drome located at the heart of the city.
Camangian said that Tagum intends to hold the tournament during the city’s fiesta during the third week of November.
Tagum City is one hour away from Davao City. The city passed through SEAVF’s initial requirement of holding the tournament three hours from the international airport.
So far, all Southeast Asian countries except for Timor Leste expressed interest in joining the event. – GMANews.TV
