Guess what?! I’m satisfied with how the girls played even they didn’t win. It could have gone either way. Breaks of the game as they say. Sets 3 to 5 were very tight, and either of the team would have finished it in 4 sets.
Let’s be easy on the girls. Being on a rebuilding stage with a new coach, and having to face top 4 contenders (ADMU, ADU and FEU) in the early part of the eliminations, is a tough task. They need more games like this for them to toughen their cohesiveness and teamwork. Individually, they are all talented and in due time, their “gelling” as a team will be developed in due time.
Here’s my comments/observations on the game:
MIA - I would like to commend Coach Odjie for bringing in Mia to play as middle. What a nice move indeed. I believe that this girl needs the motivation to bring out her real game and that is what Coach Odjie is doing, by giving his confidence on her to become a reliable middle blocker/attacker (i think she was demoralized last year). Yes, she had some errors still (especially on the last point in the 3rd set), but she contributed too in attacks and especially blocking. At least she gained experience and learn from her mistakes. Her defense also improved i must say.
PAM – Good that Pam can play as utility too. At least we have more options just in case one of the first six is having an off game (Gi, Judy, Pam & Mela can sub each other I guess). Though you see her adjustment in her new position, she is still dependable as blocker/attacker. But she has to improve her hits, floor defense and must calm her nerves in the service area which were very costly during those “dikit” sets.
JUDY – She played only on 1st set, latter part of 4th set and 5th set. I don’t know but its seems she can’t get back her groove back. Thus, she was replaced by Pam. Have decent spikes here and there (especially placement shots), good floor defense and serves. However, errors still haunts her. I don’t know why. I can say Pam was more consistent on spikes but can be easily dug. Judy has the power, so she must step up ASAP! The team needs her.
ORTIZ – Better game than the last one. Had some explosive running hits. She just has to minimize her attacking errors too. However, she was not utilized much during this game. Rhea opted to give more to open hitters even with good reception. Maybe this was their tactic to fool the blockers since Ortiz is a marked woman. I hope she can also do back quick and more blocks please!
MORADO – I can say that she did a decent job. She was steady for a rookie spiker-turned-libero. Better reception and digs which translated to those excellent sets by Rhea. But there’s still more room to improve on. Keep it up.
RHEA – With the improved reception, she was able to set the balls really well this time. Though the sets were ”open” oriented, some were fast sets which was quite effective. She made some important drop shots and tries hard to improve her floor defense (kulang pa). I’m satisfied with her setting job, but I have yet to see Rhea bring back her service aces and impeccable blocking.
MARU – What can I say. Ever reliable. She carries the load now for USTWVT. She is definitely the “go to” girl every time the team needs a point. Power hits!!! Back on her usual serve, she’s the only one who gave service aces for the team. And coupled with her digging, reception and blocking, she’s truly an all around player. I just hope that she’ll try to vary her shots. Not all power please. Abang na minsan kaya napuputo, try offspeed or dropshot minsan just to keep your opponents guessing.
GI – Balak tapatan si Maru. Thank God she is here to help Maru and Ortiz in producing points. What I like about her is her volleyball smarts. Walang pinipiling set and ginagawan ng paraan with churned points for the team. Deserving na ka-diagonal ni Maru. We have another libero in her whenever she’s at the back row.
COACH ODJIE – Kudos for the new rotation/first six composition. It made our bench deeper. I hope you could also consider a 2-man substitution whenever Rhea is in front to maintain 3 attackers in front. It would also serve as training for Lantin since this is Rhea’s last playing year. Just a suggestion.
CROWD – Unusually quiet halos kanina. Sigurado nagdarasal karamihan dahil kinakabahan din hehe. Pero I hope dumami manood ng live. Perhaps dahil sa ulan kaya tinamad karamihan pumunta. USTWVT also needs us supporters to boost their morale. Let’s cheer and pray for them.
Over-all, good job girls. They always play catch up kanina and kaya naman nila eh, nagkulang lang sila sa consistency and aggressiveness. They we’re able to match somehow the defense of ADU. Konting polishing and confidence na lang, we’re slowly getting there. There’s no other way but up from now on (realistically, I can only accept up to 3 or 4 losses for them this first round of eliminations, then bawian natin lahat ng tumalo sa atin sa second round hehe). I believe, they will pick-up on the right time.
CONGRATS ADAMSON. Thank you for giving us a very great game
ONE FOR UST!!!
