I agree. I loved china's game at that time, kahit na hindi nag-ba-backrow attack si zhou su hong. It was just sheer speed and consistency. They had wang yi mei to finish off prolonged rallies or if they needed a quick point, but still they were solid from defense to offense. Zhou was never a middle blocker. They had someone else who was just as quick and stable in both offense and defense--si liu ya nan. Sa galing nila zhou at liu sa floor defense, puedeng-puede silang mag-libero. Anyhoo, i think it was the coaches who succeeded chen zhong he that changed the landscape for china. Sila 'yong naging sobrang ambitious, that they abandoned china's strengths--speed and defense--in exchange for power. I think yung exit na Zhou Suhong and Yang Hao yung nagbago nung overall complexion nung team. Moreso si Su Hong. Their game became slower. Every one else was replaced well enough. Zhou Suhong and Lianan Yu were practically interchangeable, I liked it when they were both in the front row tapos umiikot ikot sila around each other and the defense has no idea where the ball will be set. Sabi nga nila, ang China dati meron siyang 3 middle blockers on court. By the way sino yung isa pa? Zhang Ping (the one with REALLY REALLY bad hair) was only a substitute but her serve during the olympics was the bomb (parang Berg lang nung ITA-USA na QF last olympics).

Whatever has happened to her? She was Poland's best OH after Glinka. And what a sick jumpserve! Injured? I heard she's now Anna Baranska-Werblinska. Congrats! Oo nga Anna Werblinska na siya. I think before her hiatus in NT, she was playing better than Glinka even, mas maganda yung attack ni Glinka ng konti but what horrible defense. Baranska was both offense and defense, and yes, the serve.

Speaking of Poland, they were such a star studded team during the 2008 Olympic Games -- Skowronska, Glinka, Rosner, Sadurek, Baranska, Podolec, Gajgal, Bednarek, Liktoras, Skorupa, Kaczor. To me, this is a Top 5-10 team in the world. But after their quarterfinal loss in Beijing, andaming nag retire o huminto ng pagrepresent sa Poland internationally... Players like Glinka, Rosner, Liktoras, Gajgal, Podolec and even Skowronska. All of those players were starters, so ang laking nawala sa Poland. They were left with Baranska (who I think is Poland's best OH as of the moment), Bednarek, Kaczor (a very inconsistent Opp), Skorupa, Sadurek and new comers like Karolina Kosek. Bago lang bumalik si Skowronska, Podolec also returned this time as an MB (she was known as the Jovana Brakocevic of Poland -- could have been a top Opp if not for those injuries). Sadly, looks like the new players of Poland aren't that good enough to propel the team back to the Top 10 at least. Anyway, saw the Brazil-Cuba Pan-Am games finals. I was pretty impressed with Cuba. I think they may be in the hunt for an Olympic berth. Should the USA secures an Olympic ticket through the World Cup, I think its going to be Cuba vs Dominican Republic in the Norceca for that Olympic Slot (although I am not saying Dom Rep is not capable of taking a berth through the world cup). Palacio is a very dynamic OH kinda like Ruiz. Carcases will always be consistent. Silva and Giel are inconsistent although I like Silva a looooot. She's like Daimi Ramirez, with all the passion, emotion, etc. ;D Hoping Santos or Silie could provide the needed firepower as well. Cuba's back, I guess.

True-lala! One thing that zhou su hong rarely did was the quick attack. But she did everything else that liu ya nan did. I had four favorite players from china actually at that time--zhou, liu, yang hao and feng kun. I think they were the pillars, plus libero zhang na, of the chinese team. Three of my all-time fave volleyball players are feng, liu and zhou. Zhang ping may have been initially a reserve but she eventually became the best attacker of the olympics. She replaced zhao rui rui actually who got injured (pareho noong 2008). When zhang's knees gave in, pumasok na sila xu yun li at ma yun wen. I agree. I loved china's game at that time, kahit na hindi nag-ba-backrow attack si zhou su hong. It was just sheer speed and consistency. And what is actually so bewildering to me is the seeming indifference of those polish stars towards their national team.

Feng Kun to me, was the centerpiece of the Chinese Team. Such a smart player. Truly one of the best setters in the world.

Trust me, there's a lot of Drama in Poland's National Federation plus plus their coaches! I believe Skowronska skipped the National Team for quite sometime because of their coach. And just recently Marius Wlazly (Poland Men NT) fires back at Poland's Federation for some accusations I suppose.

I wonder if miyuki takahashi is still active. Paborito ko rin 'yon e. Anyhoohoo, since we're on the topic about setters, who are your favorite setters? Incidentally, the setter is my favorite position. Mine are feng kun, takesh!ta, nootsara and fofão. I know that comparing them with startseva or kim s:"lens or ognjenovic is like comparing apples to oranges, kasi nga naman ang plays na ginagawa ng mga setter ay depende sa sistema/school of volleyball nila. I just happen to like fast and complex setting.

Feng Kun to me, was the centerpiece of the Chinese Team. Such a smart player. Truly one of the best setters in the world. THIS. She set the bar too high for a Chinese setter that is why Wei Qiuyue will never be good enough for some Chinese fans. And she ran the offense very smoothly China defeated Russia in 2004 Olympic Games with precision and quickness.

My most favorite setter would have to be Maja Ognjenovic. She's such a good setter for her size. Very athletic, very deceptive. Most of Serbia's big victories are because of her incredible setting.
My 2nd favorite setter is Nellie Spicer (USA). Been a fan of since her UCLA days. Too bad there's a log jam of the setting position for the USA squad with Berg and Glass in front. Hope to see her 2016 Rio Games.
I also like Leo Lo Bianco of Italy. Expect her to run a very fast offense pag maganda ang receive. Gioli-Lo Bianco has been bread and butter for Italy.

Oh, yes. The same in my eyes too. Haha! Compared to feng, wei is less deceptive, slower and not as assuring. Feng is so good in timing and executing very low quick sets, that it made me think over and over kung volleyball ang hawak niya at hindi lobo. Haha! How about her predecessor he qi? I didn't get to watch a lot of her. Feng Kun to me, was the centerpiece of the Chinese Team. Such a smart player. Truly one of the best setters in the world. THIS.
