from AVC:
Guangzhou, China, November 18, 2010 – Asian cup silver medal winner Korea overwhelmed Asian Champion Thailand in an unexpected straight sets match on the opening day of women’s volleyball tournament at the 16th Asian Games here on Thursday while Asian Cup holder China, powerhouse Japan also brought home their first victory. Korea overwhelmed Thailand 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-17), China beat Tajikistan 3-0 (25-5, 25-4, 25-3) and Japan rallied back to defeat Chinese Taipei 3-2 (19-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-17, 17-15). Enjoying the similar fate as the afore-mentioned top three teams are Kazakhstan who crushed Maldives in straight sets 25-7, 25-6, 25-3 and DPR Korea who defeated India 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-20). A total of 11 teams are testing their mettle in the Asian meet, vying for the top honour. They are divided into two pools, with China, Korea, Thailand, Tajikistan and Mongolia fighting in Pool A and Japan, Chinese Taipei, DPR Korea, Kazakhstan, India and Maldives taking on each other in Pool B from November 18 to 22 for the preliminary round. The top four teams of each pool enter the quarterfinal to be held on November 24, with the semifinals and finals are to be held on November 25 and 27 respectively. Pool A In an thrilling tussle between Thailand and Korea, Thailand, world No.14 and third finisher at the first Asian Cup, fielded a strong line-up including powerful Onuma Sittirak, Pluemjit Thinkaow and Wilavan Apinyapong who participated in the just-concluded World Championship in Japan, while Korea, world No.19, were also has big guns—the three towers Kim Yeon Koung, Kim Se Young and Yang Hyo Jin, all of them stand 190cm tall. The first set was very competitive from the beginning with both sides taking turns leading. Kim Yeon Koung of Korea, who proved an attacker and blocker powerhouse, supported by left-handed hitter Hwang Youn Joo, gave them three points lead at 16-13 at the second technical timeout. But Thailand rallied with tight defense and attacks with swift tricks to level at 19-19. Korea did not break under pressures and took the lead again, winning the set after Thai Nootsar Tomkom served the ball into the net. In the second and third set, Korea showed better team coordination and blocking, dominating the sets. Kim Yeon-Koung was the driving force for Korea with 23 points, supported by Yang Hyo Jin and Hwang Youn-Joo who chipped in with 11 and 10 respectively. For Thailand, Onuma Sittirak got 11 points, the top scorer of her team. "Everyone tried their best, “Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai, Thai head coach, said, “We kept our strategies during the match. Korea’s players are very tall, so it was hard for us to block. That is why we did not get a chance to win.” He added “We need to get at least one medal because we did not get any in the Asian Games. But it will be tough because we will meet a lot of strong opponents like Korea, China and Japan. We feel no pressure.” In the other match of Pool A, China, defending champion, overpowered Tajikistan in straight sets in just 42 minutes. China was too strong for their rivals. They took advantage of superior physical conditions and technical skills, comfortably beating Tajikistan. Tajikistan captain Safina Zoalshoeva said “We are amateurs. Most of us are students. Our training conditions are very tough, our playing ground is very small, but we just love volleyball” Yu Juemin, Chinese head coach, said “Today’s match was too easy for us. Korea is our major rivals in the Games. Korea is in better shape than Thailand in terms of physical and skills.” The coach also said “The Championship cost us a lot, both physically and mentally as it is tough and exhausting. But we have managed to adjust ourselves.” Pool B Kazakhstan got off to a smooth start in the opening Pool B match in Guangwai Gymnasium with a comfortable straight victory over weak Maldives and in the three sets, Kazakhstan allowed their rivals get only a total of 16 points (25-7, 25-6 and 25-3). On Maldives’ entering the match, Fathulla Waheed, Maldives coach said “They did not have pressure even though our opponents is very tall and strong” Captain Inna Matveyeva was the top scorer for Kazakhstan with 13 points and Yuliye Kutsko added 11. World Championship bronze medalist Japan, who field a young lineup in which no players participated the World Championshp, record a sensational come-from behind victory 3-2 over Chinese Taipei in two tours. Fired-up Chinese Taipei, world No.34 only, got their defense and attacking off to a flying start in the first set. A strain of mistake and ball handling errors by Japan gave Chinese Taipei some advantage. But later Japan, managed to fight back and pocket their first win.
