San Sebastian, UST in title showdownSHAKEY'S V-LEAGUE
Game Thursday (The Arena, San Juan)
4 p.m. – UST vs SSC (Game 3-Finals)
With their Thai import again expected to carry the load, San Sebastian College battles defending champion University of Santo Tomas in a winner-take-all encounter for the Shakey’s V-League championship at The Arena in San Juan City.
San Sebastian scored a thrilling five-set win Tuesday to force the rubber match as UST finally showed the effects of losing two of their star players through injuries.
The Tigresses had been gunning for its sixth title in seven years and were heavily favored to sweep the best of three series until they run into a gritty SSC squad that won the fifth and final set of the second match by the slimmest of margins, 21-25, 25-16, 15-25, 25-20, 15-13.
Thursday’s encounter is set at 4 p.m. with Thailand’s Jaroensri Bualee expected to show the way for San Sebastian.
Bualee carried the fight for the Excelroof-backed SSC squad in its previous win, churning out a team-high 27 points, including four of the team’s last six points in the fifth and final set.
“Right now, it’s anybody’s game (in Game 3). Both teams want to win. It’s now a matter of who wants it more,” said SSC coach Roger Gorayeb who is looking for the school’s second title in six finals appearances.
UST lost two key open hitters – Maru Banaticla and Angeli Tabaquero, to ankle and knee injuries, respectively, but coach Shaq de los Santos is confident that the team can bounce back..
“We should bring back the fire and motivation in the players,” said Delos Santos, who just returned to his coaching job last Tuesday after attending a seminar in Bacolod City
