Take five for tough Tigresses MANILA, Philippines - Dominant in almost every department, the University of Santo Tomas completed its magical season in the Shakey’s V-League by copping the second conference crown Tuesday night before a boisterous crowd at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan. The Tigresses worked behind their superior attack and blocking to subdue Adamson, 23-25, 25-12, 27-25, 25-19, and punctuate a two-game sweep of the finals. “Our victories this year are a testament to our hard work and teamwork,” said UST coach Cesael Delos Santos. “We don’t rely on just one person on this team.” Already the league’s winningest unit when it ruled the first conference, UST further cemented its status as the league’s finest with a fifth crown overall since 2004. Delos Santos dedicated the victory to former UST coach August Sta. Maria, who suffered a stroke two years ago. “This win is for him,” Delos Santos, who bagged his second crown since taking the reins, said. “He was the one who started everything. I’m just lucky I inherited talented players in this team.” Adjudged as Most Valuable Player of the conference before the game, UST skipper Aiza Maizo struck with a 16-point effort, including the game’s last two points. Maizo, who also earned Finals MVP honors, was instrumental in a play that fittingly illustrated UST’s dominance of the series. Leading 23-18 in the fourth set, Maizo and the towering Roxanne Pimentel blocked the smash of Angela Benting to push the Tigresses to championship point. The MVP then punctured the Adamson defense with an attack to the middle, sending the UST gallery into delirium. The Tigresses clawed their way back from a 1-10 hole in the fourth set as the 35-year-old Pimentel flashed her old, fiery form. “At least, we treated the fans to a quality game,” said Adamson coach Dulce Pante, who steered the Lady Falcons to only their second finals appearance. Earlier, Far Eastern University clinched third place with a 25-20, 10-25, 25-11, 21-25, 15-10 victory over San Sebastian. Source: www.inquirer.netGo USTe...GROWL LOUD and PROUD !!!
