UST eyes fourth straight Shakey’s V-League win

MANILA, Philippines--University of Santo Tomas looks to extend its perfect run to four games in the Shakey’s V-League Season 6 Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Tigresses are tipped to hurdle winless University of the Philippines in the 2 p.m. showdown that will serve as the appetizer of the Far Eastern U-Adamson clash at 4 p.m.
UST is coming off a 25-20, 25-21, 25-19 triumph over Lyceum Friday that solidified its hold of top spot in the eight-team league.
Playing her first major tournament in two years, Angeli Tabaquero has become a source of strength for the Tigresses, who are seeking a record fifth title in the conference.
The 5-foot-7 Tabaquero pumped in 12 hits to lead the Tigresses against the Lady Pirates last Friday.
Lyceum actually had two players scoring in double figures with Joy Cases finishing with 17 and Jamie Peña contributing 15.
Against the Lady Maroons, the Tigresses will also pin their hopes on skipper Aiza Maizo and guest player Roxanne Pimentel, who is slowly but surely jelling with the team after a long layoff.
UST coach Shaq Delos Santos is also hoping to draw improved performances from rookies Maruja Banaticla and 6-foot-1 Allona Santiago.
The Lady Maroons remain in search of their winning form after dropping their first three games in straight-sets.
Showing they are still a force to reckon with despite the departure of Sang Laguiles and Nerissa Bautista, the Lady Falcons turned to the trio of Angela Benting, Pau Soriano and Jill Gustilo in their 25-13, 25-22, 25-15 triumph over UP.
“We’re starting to play well,” said Adamson coach Dulce Pante, whose squad dropped its opening match to UST last Sunday.
The Lady Tamaraws are looking to bounce back after suffering a 25-17, 26-28, 22-25, 17-25 loss to UST last Tuesday.
Spearheading FEU’s bid are guest player Rachel Daquis, Shaira Gonzales, Cherry Vivas and April Jose, who is slowly emerging as one of the finest setters in this tournament backed by Shakey’s Pizza, Accel, Mikasa, Mighty Bond and Oracare
Pante will also pin her hopes on guest player Charmaine Moralde, a recruit from La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, and Angelica Quinlog, who is being groomed to be the successor of Laguiles at the center of the attack.
