(Update) UST, SSC a win away of V-League finals spots 06/04/2009 | 06:17 PM Email this | Email the Editor | Print | ShareThis MANILA, Philippines – University of Santo Tomas and San Sebastian College moved a win away of arranging a finals showdown in the Shakey’s V-League after disposing off separate foes.
Guest players Aiza Maizo and Mary Jane Balse led UST to a 25-14, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18 triumph over Far Eastern University while the Lady Stags capitalized on the absence of Adamson’s guest players to post a 25-14, 25-20, 25-18 win Thursday in the sixth Shakey's V-League at The Arena in San Juan.
UST and San Sebastian’s victory gave them a 1-0 lead in their respective best-of-three semifinal series as they move one win away of arranging a finals showdown for the first conference title.
Maizo posted 21 points while Balse contributed 20 for the Tigresses as they made up for the absence of Michelle Carolino, who took a leave of absence because of a commitment to play in a beach volleyball tournament in Vietnam.
Also making their presence felt were Maika Ortiz and Rhea Dimaculangan, who both scored 12 points for the Tigresses who are targeting their sixth title in the league.
Leading FEU were Shaira Gonzalez, Irish Morada and Cherry Vivas who all produced 11 points each while Rubie de Leon, who replaced Tina Salak as FEU's guest player, managed to post nine points.
San Sebastian guest player Jaroensri Bualee, meanwhile, scored 15 points and Laurence Ann Latigay added 13 more to lead the Lady Stags in their 73-minute contest against the Lady Falcons.
Rysabelle Devanadera and Suzanne Roces, SSC’s another guest player, contributed nine points each for the Recto-based spikers.
The absence of starters and reigning most valuable player Nerissa Bautista and guest player Joanna Botor-Carpio proved to be fatal for the Lady Falcons, who are now on the verge of being eliminated that would prevent them of defending the fifth season crown they won in the first conference.
Bautista and Botor-Carpio were forced to take a leave of absence to play in an international beach volley tournament in Vietnam.
Devanadera and Bualee were unstoppable in the second set scoring the Lady Stags’ last eight points.
And just when the Lady Falcons were threatening to force a fourth set, Devanadera starred in the Lady Stags’ 12-2 run that turned a 13-16 deficit to a three-set victory.
But even with the victory, SSC coach Roger Gorayeb was far from being fully satisfied, saying that Adamson should have not taken the lead in the third set.
“We still lacked concentration that’s why Adamson was able to gain the upperhand in the third. Hopefully, we can win again on Sunday," said Gorayeb.
None of the Adamson players step up in the absence of their star players with only Paulina Soriano scoring in double digits with 10 points. Jill Gustillo added eight in Adamson's losing effort. – Perry Legaspi, GMANews.TV
