from the FIVB site:
U.S. Women earn FIVB World Championship berth, defeats Costa Rica
USA team celebrate their FIVB 2010 World Championship berth Orlando, Florida, July 8, 2009 - The U.S. Women’s National Team earned a spot into next year’s FIVB World Championship after topping Costa Rica 25-15, 25-9, 25-15 on Wednesday evening in Orlando to finish the FIVB World Championship Qualification Tournament - NORCECA Pool G with an undefeated 3-0 record.
As the second-place team, Costa Rica remains alive in the qualification process and will compete next month in the four-team NORCECA Playoff Round in Tijuana, Mexico. The Playoff Round will fill NORCECA’s final two World Championship vacancies.
Earlier in the evening, Netherlands Antilles held off a fierce comeback by Barbados with a 25-22, 20-25, 27-25, 21-25, 16-14 victory to claim third place.
The U.S. was led by tournament Most Valuable Player and Best Spiker Cynthia Barboza and Jane Collymore, who had 18 points apiece in the match. Karen Cope paced Costa Rica with nine points, while Verania Willis provided the second-place team with seven points.
“I honestly think Costa Rica is a good team and better than when we last played them at the Pan American Cup,” U.S. Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon said. “At the same time, I think we are a better team. We went into tonight’s match with a plan and executed it. We are happy that we have qualified for the World Championships next year.”
In addition to Barboza’s two individual awards, USA’s Stacy Sykora pulled in three individual honors as Best Digger, Best Receiver and Best Libero. Courtney Thompson of the U.S. earned Best Setter and Best Server. Netherlands Antilles’ Christine Anthony earned the Best Scorer honor, while Barbados’ Thonya Joseph was presented the Best Blocker award.
The U.S. used a dominant service game to register a 9-1 ace advantage that kept Costa Rica out of system for much of the match. The Americans held a 44-22 advantage in kills and a 5-2 margin in blocks.
“We are trying to get better on each play,” Scott-Arruda said. “We are glad to be on the medal stand here and qualified for the World Championship.”
“Congratulations to USA,” said Costa Rica captain Verania Willis. “I think USA has a good defense and block. They also play a very fast pace that we have not seen and played against that much.”
“After playing all these days (at the Pan American Cup and FIVB World Championship Qualification Tournament), our players are very tired,” Costa Rica Head Coach Henry Rodriguez said. “But our players played with a lot of heart against one of the best teams in the world.”
Individual Honors Most Valuable Player: Cynthia Barboza (USA) Best Scorer: Christine Anthony (Netherlands Antilles) Best Spiker: Cynthia Barboza (USA) Best Setter: Courtney Thompson (USA) Best Server: Courtney Thompson (USA) Best Blocker: Thonya Joseph (Barbados) Best Digger: Stacy Sykora (USA) Best Receiver: Stacy Sykora (USA) Best Libero: Stacy Sykora (USA)

Some World League news:
Brazil beaten in pool play by Finland: from FIVB site:
Brazilian defeat gives hope to World League rivals in Round 5
Italy manhandled the Dutch to move back into contention in Pool A Lausanne, July 8, 2009 – Fifteen teams took a sigh of relief last weekend when they discovered, thanks to Finland, that the previously unbeaten Brazilians were conquerable after all in the 2009 FIVB World League.
Finland’s 3-2 victory over Brazil on Saturday was both a wake-up call for the South Americans and a reminder to other teams at the tournament that anything can happen with two intercontinental rounds left to play before the Final Six in Belgrade, Serbia from July 22-26.
Some interesting clashes are set for the penultimate round this weekend, in particular a top-of-the-table clash between defending champions the USA and a resurgent Italy in Pool A.
In Pool A, Italy has turned around its fortunes significantly since winning only one of its first four matches and being roundly criticized by fans and media alike back at home. Four straight wins, all over the Netherlands, have catapulted the Azzurri into second place in the Pool, just four points adrift of leaders the USA.
The teams lock horns this weekend in the U.S. in a two-game series that may determine which of the two teams will advance to the final round in Serbia. The U.S. defeated Italy twice (3-1, 3-1) when the teams played in Italy on June 19 and 21, but coach Alan Knipe knows his team will face a much better Italian side this time around. "I think Italy will be much improved from when we faced them," Knipe said. "We will need to play our best volleyball."
Heading the other direction in the Pool are the Dutch, who once topped the table after opening the tournament with a surprise win over Team USA. The Netherlands now sit in third place with a 3-5 record and will have to beat China (2-6) twice and hope the U.S. wins both its matches against Italy to regain second place for a shot at winning the wild card to the Final Six.
In Pool B, all three participants aside from Serbia, which has already received a bye to Belgrade as host country, stand a chance at winning a ticket to the Final Round. Only three points separate second-place Argentina (12 pts) and last-place Korea (9 pts), with France squarely in the thick of things with 11 pts.
While Argentina hosts first-place Serbia in Round 5, they will be confident not only in their performances of late but also by the fact that Serbia will be without some of their top players, as coach Igor Kolakovic decided to spare them from the gruelling journey to South America as he looks ahead to the Final Six.
France and Korea, meanwhile, will not spare any player in their crunch encounter in Cheonan. France won both its home matches (3-1, 3-2) against Korea earlier in the tournament but with their backs to the wall, Korea is expected to come out swinging this weekend.
In Pool C, second-place Russia let its chances of finishing first slip away slightly last weekend in a split at home against leaders Cuba, but the team has vowed to play its final four intercontinental matches with the intention of knocking the Cubans off their perch, as difficult as that now is being five points adrift.
"As long as we have a slim chance (of finishing first) we should cling to it, " said Russian coach Daniele Bagnoli.
Russia, who is 22-2 historically against this round’s oppenents Japan, will be hoping the underperforming Bulgarians can lend them a hand when they play Cuba in matches on Saturday and Sunday.
In Pool D, Brazil’s stellar run at the tournament came to a crashing halt last Saturday when they were upended 22-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 17-15 by Finland in Tampere. Still, the Brazilians remain a comfortable 10 points ahead of both Finland and Poland, while Venezuela, with 5 points and no chance of advancing, pulls up the rear.
With Brazil (7-1) playing Venezuela (1-7) in its final four first-round matches, the only real battle left in this group is that for second place and a shot at winning the one and only wild card to the Final Six. Finland (4-4) hosts Poland (4-4) in Round 5 with Poland returning the favor in Round 6.
"These four matches versus Poland will be a great test for our team. The most difficult thing after our victory against Brazil will be to be mentally ready for a new fight," said Finnish coach Mauro Berruto.
"I'm sure on Friday we'll need to play again at 120 percent. We must know that and be ready for the first match. Sport is amazing and simultaneously cruel because when you achieve something, the next day you must be ready for something more difficult."

from the FIVB site:
Countdown on to start of 17th Edition of World Grand Prix
The start of the 17th edition of the FIVB World Grand Prix is days away, and 12 of the world's top women's Volleyball teams are gearing up for a chance to reach the Final Round in Tokyo from August 19-23, 2009.
The three preliminary-round weekends are set for July 31 to August 16. Each of the 12 teams will play nine preliminary round matches.
The best five teams after the preliminary rounds as well as host country Japan will advance to the final phase. A round robin system will be played with 15 matches in total to decide the 2009 FIVB World Grand Prix Champions.
There are some surprise first time participants at the 2009 edition, as well as some shock absences.
The 12 teams to secure berths in the annual women's international event were Brazil, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, USA, Poland, Netherlands, Russia, Germany, China, Japan, Korea and Thailand.
Puerto Rico booked their place in the FIVB World Grand Prix for the first time with a 4th place finish at the Pan American Cup in Mexico in June 2008.
It was a glorious achievement for the NORCECA team, not least because they qualified at the expense of the mighty Cuba, the 3 time Olympic Champions, who had previously appeared in every single World Grand Prix, winning Gold in 1993 and silver in 2008.
Also conspicuous by their absence will be 2007 FIVB World Cup winners and 2008 World Grand Prix bronze medalist Italy, who will miss the tournament for the first time in 2002. They were unable to crack the top three at the European qualification.
There are some familiar faces among the qualified countries like reigning Olympic and World Grand Prix Champions Brazil, who have a record of 7 golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze, two time gold medalist USA, and the Dominican Republic.
Russia and Germany advance from the European tournament behind Netherlands. Poland was wild card whose best performance was sixth in 2007.
China and Japan will be the only team countries to have competed in every single World Grand Prix when they appear in 2009.
Korea and Thailand finished in the qualifying positions at the Asian Women's Cup in Thailand in September 2008.

hehehehe! but i'm proud of thailand, kahit na inisip ko rin na matatalo sila. hindi ko pa napapanood ang game, pero siguro kung si skowronska at hindi si kaczor ang naglaro, baka manalo ang poland. atsaka judging by the stats sa website ng fivb, mukhang naglaro si em-orn bilang middle blocker. napanood mo ba? hinahanap ko pa sa youtube e. (pero may nakita na akong russia-korea match)

ako nagulat! (may exclamation pa nga o. hehehe) goooooo, thailand! i'm proud of them, to think many people hold them as "japan junior" because they adopted a lot from the volleyball japanese system. woohoo! to think (number 2), japan used the great takenutsa in all five sets. wonder what's up with japan? dahil kaya bago ang coach? Wow, nanalo ulet ang mga Thais ngayon naman laban sa Japanese. Pero di na rin ako masyadong nagulat. hehe
