UST tennis, volleyball squads try to stretch unbeaten runs
By Jasmine W. Payo Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 23:24:00 02/02/2008
MANILA, Philippines--THE UNIVERSITY OF SANTO Tomas continues to make the UAAP its playground as its men’s tennis and men’s volleyball teams try to stretch their unbeaten runs, while the baseball, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball squads vie to sustain their strong start.
With their title defense right on track, the Tigers will open their second round campaign against the University of the East in the men’s tennis competition at noon today at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Tiger netters swept the first round of eliminations, forging a 4-0 start behind reigning Most Valuable Player Wilbur Orillano.
Pacing women’s tennis action at 4-1, the Tigresses will shoot for another triumph in the second round versus La Salle at 9 a.m. today in the same venue.
Also riding on a phenomenal winning streak, the UST tossers eye their 13th straight triumph against cellar-dwelling National University at 8 a.m. on Wednesday at the Blue Eagle Gym.
Although assured of the twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinals, the Tigers are seeking to move within a win of sweeping the elimination round.
But the UST Lady Spikers have more crucial games ahead as they remain tied with Far Eastern University for second place at 9-2.
The defending champions will go up against hard-luck University of the East at 10 a.m. today, right after FEU tangles with La Salle at 8 a.m. at the Blue Eagle Gym.
Adamson, the surprise leader at 10-1, will also try to strengthen its bid for the twice-to-beat semifinal bonus versus the University of the Philippines at 4 p.m.
Even at the baseball diamond, UST hopes to extend its dominance as it continues to share the top spot with the UP batters at 5-1.
The Tiger IX will go up against struggling Ateneo today, right after the Maroons fire off action at 8 a.m. against third-running NU at the Rizal Memorial Ballpark.
Badminton competition, meanwhile, kicked off this weekend with the Tamaraws vying for another sweep of the men and women’s divisions at the Rizal Badminton Courts.
In football, the Ateneo Blue Booters, toting a 5-0-1 win-draw-loss card, will try to keep solo leadership against UE at 1 p.m. today in their homecourt at the Erenchun Field.
Defending champion UST goes up against struggling La Salle at 10 a.m., while second-running FEU tackles UP at 3 p.m.
But the Ateneo Lady Booters hope to step up their game after reigning title-holder FEU grabbed the top spot with a 3-1-1 record following a 5-0 blanking of UP last Wednesday.
The Lady Eagles, who fell to second at 2-2-0, will clash against UST at 3 p.m. at the Ocampo field in Ateneo.
