By Jasmine W. Payo Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 23:25:00 02/02/2008
MANILA, Philippines--COLLEGE OF ST. BENILDE pulled off a first-round surprise by sweeping the seniors and juniors events of the NCAA tennis competition yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The Blazers romped to a six-game sweep after upsetting defending champion San Sebastian College, 2-1, with victories in the singles matches.
Martin Ramos stunned top Stags bet Michael Tamayo, 6-2, 6-4, in the first game, while Daniel Bautista easily brushed off the pressure to claim the decider, 6-1, 6-1 against Alrashid Manatad.
Tamayo and Manatad evened the battle by repulsing the pair of Ramos and Raymund Padigus, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, in the doubles match.
The Stags slipped to second with a 5-1 win-loss slate, while the Perpetual Help Altas improved to third at 3-3 after sweeping the winless Mapua, 3-0.
San Beda and Letran shared fourth place at 2-4, followed by Jose Rizal at 1-4.
In juniors action, CSB-La Salle Greenhills scored a four-game sweep by crushing the Staglets, 3-0, to wrap up the first round.
The Altalettes swept the winless Letran Squires, 3-0, to claim the second spot with a 3-1 slate.

SSC, Benilde beach tossers win 'NC' titles
San Sebastian College and College of St Benilde completed a grand sweep of the women’s and men’s titles in the NCAA beach volleyball tournament held over the weekend at the La Salle Greenhills sand courts.
San Sebastian’s Lou Ann Latigay and Margarita Pepito proved too much for St. Benilde’s Hazel Cay and Girly Quemada to win the women’s plum, 21-10, 21-13.
With Latigag and Pepito repeatedly shattering their rival’s defense with thunder-like spikes, the duo won their seventh straight game to complete their dominance of the league.
It was the third title for San Sebastian since winning the event in 2002 and 2003.
Von Mabazza and Eddie Madcon of St. Benilde made up for the loss of the women’s counterpart by trouncing Eden Canlas and Warren Pirante of Letran, 21-19, 21-19, for the school’s fifth title in seven years.
The win was the eight for Blazers to underscore their status in the event.
San Sebastian made it to the Finals without a dropping a sweat as they won via a walkover Jeen-Arc Baguio and Kesia de Luna of University of Perpetual Help System Dalta in the four-week tournament sponsored by Mikasa and Speedo, and hosted by Letran.
The Lady Altas decided to withdraw their semifinal game against the Lady Stags due to the injury suffered by Baguio.
Latigay was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP), while the Lady Stags mentor Roger Gorayeb took the Best Coach award in the women’s division.
The men’s MVP honors went to Mabazza, while CSB mentor Parley Tupaz was awarded best coach.
Meantime, Erick Ramos and Jomari Badiong of the Squires downed the Altalettes’ Nico Melencio and Sandy Montero, 21-10, 21-11, to clinch the inaugural junior’s title.
Ramos was later named MVP of the event, while Letran’s Brian Esquibel was named best coach.

SSC, Benilde dominate NCAA beach volley
Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 02:45:00 02/15/2008
MANILA, Philippines -- San Sebastian College and College of St. Benilde capped their unbeaten runs with a championship in the NCAA beach volleyball tournament.
The San Sebastian Lady Stags pair of Lou Ann Latigay and Margarita Pepito banked on their pin-point kills to bag the women’s crown, while the CSB Blazers tandem of Von Mabazza and Eddie Madcon asserted their might in the men’s Finals recently at the La Salle Greenhills sand courts.
Latigay, named most valuable player, and Pepito easily crushed the St. Benilde duo of Hazel Cay and Girly Quemada, 21-10, 21-13, to complete a seven-game title sweep.
Mentor Roger Gorayeb won the Coach of the Year award after steering the Lady Stags back to the crown. They posted back-to-back championships in 2002 and 2003.
The Blazers’ MVP Mabazza and Madcon picked up their eighth straight victory by disposing of Eden Canlas and Warren Pirante of Letran College, 21-19, 21-19. Parley Tupaz earned the top coaching honors as the Blazers nailed their fifth men’s championship in seven seasons.
In high school action, Letran’s Erickson Ramos and Jomari Badiong whipped University of Perpetual Help’s Nico Melencio and Sandy Montero, 21-10, 21-11, to grab the junior title.
The Letran Squires also swept the individual citations with Ramos taking the MVP plum and Brian Esquibel the Best Coach award. Jasmine W. Payo
