UAAP volleyball coaching carousel begins..
In the aftermath of the most successful volleyball season in UAAP history, school are now scrambling to get the best talent available.. players AND coaches.
San Sebastian mentor Roger Gorayeb is set to lead the Ateneo squad for their next UAAP campaign. He will serve as a mentor / consultant for the upcoming v-league as assistant coach Mic Mic Labrote has been promoted to head coach.
Moving across Katipunan will be now former Ateneo coach Ron Dulay, who moves to UP to lead their up-and-coming roster.
For Ateneo, this will be a test for their players’ commitment to the game. Coach Roger is known to run a tight ship, and if the players are anything less than 100% commited to the team.. then well.. watch out. For those who think this maybe a little strict and rather too much, go look at San Sebastian’s trophy case. Its the big one, with lots of championships.
For San Sebastian, there probably wont be any major changes to the team’s core, as coach Roger has already trained and developed them in his style for years. If anything, this situation only fast-tracks the leadership development of Lou Ann Latigay and Sasa Devanadera for the upcoming v-league. Plus with the additional experience and exchange of ideas coach Roger will get from Ateneo, this only makes SSC-R even more dangerous in the upcoming v-league.
So for the upcoming V-League, Coach Roger Gorayeb will still be the full time head coach of SSC-R. Coach Mic Mic Labrote for Ateneo, and coach Roger as a special consultant. Only during the UAAP games (December 2008) will he be the team’s head coach.
Yes, its a conflict of interest kind of thing, but if i were to think of outstanding coaches who could handle double duties while not neglecting the other, coach Roger is one of them. Plus, if you think about it, the more players coach Roger gets to train, the better for the sport of volleyball as a whole. =P
Stay Tuned..
