PSEP Finals Preview
DLSU Lady Spikers
The Lady Archers won't settle for anything less than being this year's champions.
The determination and talent of La Salle this season is so loaded. I am looking at their team line-up along with team statistics and its simply amazing. Its like you if you take any two players on their team and they might still have a chance of being on the finals.
Let's start from the coaching, the La Salle coaching staff is simply great. Coach Ramil De Jesus is not only a good motivator, he is also like a godfather figure to the La Salle team. If Adamson has coach 'mother' Minerva Dulce Pante, La Salle has godfather Ramil De Jesus.
La Salle has a deep bench this season and they have great second stringers as well. Its no wonder La Salle is doing great, the coach can rest any two players at a time and still get good results.
On offense, La Salle has three superstars, Stephanie Mercado, Jaqueline Alarca and of course, Manilla Santos. These three players alone can scare any team from enterting the playing court. The combined spiking power from these three is enough to bring migraines on the coaching staff of the opposing team and bring nightmares to the other team's defense.
On blocking, La Salle defensive specialists like Michelle Datuin and Charleen Abigail Cruz keeps any opposing team at bay. The La Salle team isnt as tall as UST, but their players probably have the highest vertical leaps I have ever seen in the UAAP. And the result is they make great saves and blocks.
Volleyball isn't just about scoring, its also about hustle. La Salle is no stranger to hustle. Players like the full of energy Melissa Gohing, Charleen Abigail Cruz and Manilla Santos keep opponents from scoring with their great digs and saves. What I like about La Salle is that they will not give up even on a single point or set if they can save it or prevent it from happening. Statistically speaking, they are the third best digging team on the UAAP better than UST or FEU.
One of the reasons they are seemingly unbeatable is because of their tenacity. Their relentlessness that is frankly simply because of La Salle's fighting spirit. That is one reason they are in the finals.
As a team, they have had 635 spikes thus far making them no. 1 in this department, better than UST or Adamson combined with a percentage of 34.72%
La Salle is also the no. 1 team in blocking with 137 kill blocks. More than UST, FEU or Adamson. They average 3 good blocks per set, higher than any team in the UAAP.
This team is also the second best server as a team in the league with 77 aces so far.
The La Salle setter, Ma. Klarissa Martinez is one of the League's reliable setters. She may not be the no. 1 setter, but she gets the job done. And La Salle is one scrappy and relentless team. I am not surprised they are in the finals, frankly, they deserve to be. As a team, La Salle is the fourth best setting team better than Ateneo or UE. They are also the second best receiving team in the UAAP with 296 excellent receptions that is better than FEU, UST or Ateneo.
Can FEU beat La Salle? Yes and No. Yes probably because La Salle is still a team that is still subject to errors / mistakes, an off day and bad games and No because La Salle is a seasoned team that will not let an opportunity like the finals pass them by. FEU will be to hell and back if they are to defeat La Salle this year. One thing is for sure, they are not the underdogs this season.

FEU Lady Tamaraws
The defending champions, FEU Lady Tamaraws
They are the defending champions of UAAP Women's Volleyball. The FEU Lady Tamaraws is also the second baddest volleyball team (wickedly good) in the UAAP today with only two losses after two rounds. Its not hard to imagine this team in the finals. Their team captain and leader, the stunning and deadly spiker Rachel Ann Daquis is one mean volleyball machine. Rachel is no. 3 in scoring, she has already 166 spikes, 28 blocks and 14 service aces so far and its for sure it won't stop there.
Another player from FEU, Shaira Gonzales is no. 6 on the top ten scoring of the league with 164 spikes, 19 blocks and 18 service aces thus far.
Still another player, Mecaila Irish May Morada, is no. 8 best scorer in the UAAP today with 139 spikes, 18 blocks an 30 service aces thus far.
These three players, Shaira, Mecaila and Rachel Anne is the trio that could spell the difference when FEU battles La Salle in the finals. This trio is very lethal on offense specially spiking. As a team, FEU is the 4th best team in terms of spiking with 687 spikes, better than Ateneo or UE.
In blocking, FEU has Rachel Anne Daquis is no. 5 in the league with 28 kill blocks, Cherry May Vivas is no. 6 in the UAAP with 25 kill blocks so far. These two players are the dynamic duo that lead the team of FEU on defense. As a team, FEU is the league's 4th best team in blocking with 96 kill blocks better than Adamson, Ateneo or UE.
The best server in the UAAP comes from FEU, Mecaila Irish May Morada leads the pack with 30 service aces, better than Jaqueline Alarca of La Salle or even Angela Benting of Adamson. As a team, FEU is the league leader in serving with 99 service aces thus far.
In the digging category, Rose Ann Taganas handles this department being the no. 4 digger in the league with 152 digs so far, better than Angela Benting of Adamson or Judy Ann Caballejo of UST. As a team, FEU is the 5th best in digging, better than UE or UP.
While in the setting department, FEU's setter, April Linor Jose is league runner-up with 872 running sets and 705 still sets, statistics better than Jamanea Ferrer or Rhea Katrina Dimaculangan. As a team, FEU is the 2nd best setter in the league with 912 running sets and 904 still sets. Their percentage and statistics is better than UST, Ateneo, UE and UP.
In FEU's roster of receivers, Rose Ann Taganas is runner-up as well in this field with 185 excellent receptions and an percentage of 38.41. A percentage higher than Angela Benting or Stephanie Gabriel. As a team, they are the 3rd best receiver team on the league with 296 excellent receptions, stats better than UE, Ateneo or even UST.
FEU is one tough team. They are fiery and very energetic. If there is a weakness to FEU, its probably their ineffectiveness to shut out teams immediately. I rememeber games wherein they had to defeat teams on the fifth set. As great as it may seem, if they want to defeat La Salle, they must shut La Salle out. Thier opponent is a team that donesnt care if they score or not. La Salle has this killer's instinct that is hard to deny. Heck, that is why Adamson and UST wanted to face them instead of La Salle in the first place.
Its going to be a tough and long road ahead. FEU has what it takes to beat La Salle, but will they be able to do it is another matter.
If FEU can surprise La Salle with something that will keep them off center while the game is going on, it may help them with a victory. How will they do it? or what it is, is beyond me.
Both teams are preparing for an all-out war. And its going to be an explosive game.
We love both teams, FEU deserves to defend its crown, La Salle also deserves to win because they are the no. 1 team after two rounds. Who will be the last team standing when all is said and done. Find out tommorrow as PSEP predicts the winner through a step by step statistical analysis.
