UST set to wrap up 10th overall UAAP championship
MANILA, Philippines -- University of Santo Tomas seemed poised to capture the UAAP overall championship for the 10th straight year after picking up one more title in the last three events decided over the weekend.
UST split volleyball honors with Far Eastern University while Adamson University captured the baseball crown as the curtains rang down on the league's 70th season.
But UST's jubilation was marred Monday by news that long-time women's volleyball coach August Sta. Maria, who steered the Tigresses to numerous championships, had suffered a stroke and is now half-paralyzed.
The UST Tigers ended the FEU Tamaraws' three-year reign in men's volleyball with a 25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-11 victory to clinch the best-of-three Finals series, 2-1, Sunday night at The Arena in San Juan City.
But it was the Lady Tamaraws who made a mark in women's action with a thrilling 14-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 15-9 triumph over the Lady Falcons in a title series that also reached the full distance.
In baseball, the Falcons dethroned the Tigers with a 5-3 win in their winner-take-all Game 3 duel last Sunday at the Rizal Memorial ballpark.
The men's volleyball title was the Tigers' ninth crown this season. They swept the tennis competition and ruled men's table tennis, men's fencing, women's swimming, women's chess, women's :"kwondo and women's badminton.
MVP Reno Roque, James Pecaña and John Torres paced the Tigers, who reclaimed the men's volleyball title they last won in the 2002-03 season.
The Tigers reached match point, 14-11, on a Roque kill, and the Tamaraws sealed their own doom as a Jan Peñaranda hit went out of bounds.
Pecaña topscored with 22 markers, while Torres added 20 hits.
In the women's Finals, the Lady Tamaraws spoiled the Adamson Lady Falcons' bid for their first championship behind the balanced attack of MVP Wendy Semana, Anna Abanto, Maica Morada and Rachel Daquis.
Abanto paced the Lady Tams with 16 kills, while Morada chipped in 15.
Romeo Jasmin emerged as MVP after powering the Falcons to their first baseball championship in six years.
Sana He gets better!
