2 Visayas teams join V-League By FRANCIS SANTIAGO from Manila Bulletin
Two powerhouse Visayan teams will add spice in the volleyball wars as the first conference of the 5th Shakey’s V-League kicks off on March 30 at The Arena in San Juan City.
Champion teams University of San Jose-Recoletos of Cebu and University of St. La Salle of Bacolod will make their debut in the biggest stage of the sport where top squads from UAAP and NCAA strut their wares.
Tonyboy Liao, commissioner of the tournament, said they decided to invite teams from Visayas since "volleyball is very popular there."
"The two teams will surely make the games more interesting and exciting. And this is also our way of reaching out to schools outside Manila," said Liao, appearing alongside Sports Vision chairman Moying Martelino, Shakey’s general manager Vicente Gregorio and marketing director Meggie Jose in the weekly PSA Forum at Shakey’s U.N. Ave. branch.
Liao said the two teams, regular fixtures in the UniGames in Bacolod where UAAP and NCAA teams also play, will play only in the quarterfinals. They won’t play in the elimination due to logistical constraints.
They will match skills opposite back-to-back champion University of Santo Tomas, San Sebastian College, Ateneo de Manila University, Adamson University ,De La Salle University, Far Eastern University, Lyceum of the Philippines University and debuting College of Saint Benilde.
St. Benilde play for the first time in the tourney after Letran failed to make it in NCAA finals.
Martelino said the move to expand the league by including the Visayan teams was fueled by the overwhelming support of the fans in the past four seasons.
"In the past, Shakey’s had no following, but now we have great crowd. I think the fruits of our efforts are seen even in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament which now warrants TV coverage," said Martelino.
Meanwhile, Jackelyn Alarca, La Salle’s ace player who was found ineligible to play in the recently concluded UAAP volleyball season, will be allowed to play in the tournament.
It would be recalled that the UAAP board punished La Salle after it found out that Alarca was not enrolled in the third semester of the school, making her ineligible to play. La Salle’s last four wins were cancelled as penalty.
"We will allow her to play since La Salle wrote to us. And in fact, she is eligible be part of the team since she played in the UAAP team last season," Martelino said.
Meantime, Gregorio said he is grateful for the support the people has given to the sport and in their brand name.
"This is a social contribution. The popularity of the brand has given us much and we appreciate it," said Gregorio, adding that Shakey’s was awarded the 2007 Most Outstanding Filipino Franchise in food category.
The opening ceremony will start at 1 p.m.
There will be a single round robin in the elimination for the eight teams where the top two teams automatically clinch the semifinal slots while the last two eliminated. The remaining four will meet the Visayan teams in the one-round quarterfinals where the top two qualify in the semis.
The top two teams in the classification phase and the top two teams of the quarterfinals will play another single round for the placing in the final. The third and fourth placed teams will play a best-of-three for the bronze medal while the first and second ranked team will play for the best-of-three series for the gold medal.

Visayas schools highlight Shakey’s ‘V’ tilt By Reuben Terrado Correspondent TWO prominent universities from the provinces will slug it out alongside top teams in Metro Manila as the Shakey’s V-League first conference opens on March 30 at The Arena in San Juan.
University of San Jose-Recoletos-Cebu and University of St. La Salle Bacolod have been added to the roster of teams in the league, which is now on its fifth season.
They will compete against University Athletic Association of the Philippines champion Far Eastern University, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) titlist San Sebastian College-Recoletos, Women’s NCAA champion Lyceum of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, Adamson University, Ateneo de Manila University, De la Salle University and College of Saint Benilde.
“We have the best teams in Metro Manila and, now, we have the best teams in the Visayas,” said Moying Martelino, chairman of the organizing Sports Vision.
The Visayan teams will actually join the fray starting only at the quarterfinal round as the eight Metro Manila-based teams will fight it out for two outright semifinal berths in the eliminations, with the next four teams competing in the quarterfinals.
In the single-round quarterfinals, the top two teams will advance to the best-of-three championship series in June, unless any team other than the two wins three of five games. That team will face the No. 2 squad in a playoff for the last finals seat.
League commissioner Tony Boy Liao said the addition of two Visayan teams will give the Metro Manila teams a run for their money.
“Volleyball in Cebu and Bacolod is very popular and very competitive. We have invited them and with their addition, we really expect an evenly matched tournament,” Liao told the Philippine Sportswriters Association Tuesday at the Shakey’s United Nations Avenue.
Playing dates will be every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday at The Arena, to be aired on a delayed basis on NBN 4.
Each team will be allowed one guest player along with the 12 regulars who played for the school year 2007-08.
Shakey’s general manager Vic Gregorio has expressed his continued support to the league.
“The awareness of volleyball, as well as Shakey’s, [has] have really increased and we appreciate the connection,” said Gregorio.
Shakey’s marketing director Meggie Jose said gimmicks will be conducted in various Shakey’s branches to continue its promotion of the league.
Also present in the forum were Sports Vision directors Rhea Navarro and Nolan Bernardino.
Gregorio also proudly announced that Shakey’s was named 2007 Most Outstanding Filipino Franchise (food category), an award he said wouldn’t be possible without the V-League around.
“Sponsoring the V-League, which has tremendously grew throughout these years, is among the various efforts being done by the store. Our popular brand of pizza has increased with the V-League. So we’re happy to be equated with it,” said Gregorio.
August Santamaria, coach of the multititled UST women’s volleyball team, meanwhile, is recovering in the hospital after suffering from a mild stroke Sunday.

Would this mean that the Vleague Management will not be allowing Charleen Cruz/Manilla Santos for DLSU? and Vida Rica Gutierrez/Aiza Maizo for UST?

THREE LASALLE TEAMS PARADING IN THE VLEAGUE by Miles Dy of Spikeithard.com
Three La Salle teams namely De La Salle University, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and University of Saint La Salle-Bacolod will be parading in the 10-team league. De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde was included because of being in the Championship with San Sebastian in the NCAA Season 83. University of Saint La Salle-Bacolod meanwhile will be included due to its excellent volleyball program and its relentless performance in the University Games. It is quite understandable why De La Salle University will be included since they’ve already been 3-peat champions in the league.
Another school, University of San Jose-Recoletos has been added to the roster of teams having a number of championships won in Cebu.
Teams who will be back are defending champion University of Santo Tomas, UAAP champion Far Eastern University, NCAA champion and V-League finalist San Sebastian College-Recoletos, WNCAA champion Lyceum of the Philippines University, UAAP finalist Adamson University and UAAP Semifinalist and V-League Third Placer Ateneo de Manila University.
There will be around 5 teams who will be acquiring Thai imports to spice up the league. Each team will only be allowed one guest player after much deliberations.
Opening will be on March 30 at The Arena. There is no schedule yet but it is said that it is possible that San Sebastian will meet Adamson in the opening game and the much-awaited Ateneo vs UST in the main event slated at 4 PM.
