V-League Fever (part 2)by Miles Dy, www.spikeithard.com(NOTE: The following info are mostly just assumptions and/or rumors from very reliable sources. You should read V-League Fever Part 1 first.) - It is offical. De La Salle University - Manila and University of Santo Tomas will no longer play this coming conference after losing key players to graduation, the injuries being experienced by their players and for the reason that they will focus more in training for the next UAAP tournament, hosted by University of the Philippines.
- Ateneo de Manila University is all set to go after finally setting the deal with their guest player. Their guest player is the former team captain of Thailand and is one of their National Team’s best scorers. She averaged 17 points per game last FIVB 2004, 2005 and 2006 World Grand Prix and is considered as one of Thailand’s best at the age of 26. She is left-handed and can play any position. She stands at 180 cm or 5′10″ ft. If ever, this will be the best guest player that we will witness in the V-League.
- Adamson University, after dropping the idea of getting Suzanne Roces, has acquired Nerissa Bautista again of University of San Agusting. Nerissa Bautista played with Ateneo de Manila University and University of Santo Tomas. She stands at around 6′0″ ft and is definitely considered as one of the versatile players around after playing both outside hitter and middle blocker both in the RP Team and Adamson Lady Falcons. She will definitely be a big boost since the Adamson Lady Falcons need height and offense after having failed to win their first-ever UAAP championship. They are also a team who has an advantage since they already had Nerissa Bautista as their guest player before, so jelling will not be a problem.
- Far Eastern University, who also lost the opportunity to get a Thai player because of a commitment, will be parading RP Women’s Beach Volleyball Player Michelle Carolino. Michelle Carolino is probably one of the players who has a great following, this is so because of her power spikes when she played for De La Salle University - Manila before. She was also hailed as the Most Valuable Player and Best Attacker in the 2004 Season of the V-League. She stands at 5′9″ but she is definitely one of the players who can leap high and give some 6-feet-under spikes. It is interesting to note how Far Eastern University got her as guest player. Coach Nestor Pamiliar, the current coach of the Lady Tamaraws, was the coach of Colegio de San Juan de Letran for so many years, and Michelle Carolino was one of her players. So it is quite understandable that they will have Michelle Carolino as guest player this season.
- San Sebastian College - Recoletos, after losing Jaroensri Bualee due to a previous commitment in Vietnam, has been allegedly training with former UE Red Skirt and National Team Player Suzanne Roces. Suzanne Roces stands at 5′10″ and is considered as one of the best middle blockers in the country. Last conference, in the Semi-Finals and Finals combined, she averaged 21 points per game, which gave University of Santo Tomas a lot of help in a winning back-to-back championship. It is but notable that she will now play for the a team she and the Tigresses defeated last conference in the Finals.
More updates soon!

La Salle quits V-League Archers second team to withdraw after UST
By FRANCIS SANTIAGO
The Shakey’s V-League, the country’s premier volleyball tournament, suffered another blow yesterday when De La Salle University pulled out of the tournament, joining University of Santo Tomas in the sidelines and leaving the tournament without two of its top and most popular teams.
The tournament comes off the wraps on March 30 at The Arena in San Juan City.
Shakey’s V-League operations director Ricky Palou announced La Salle’s withdrawal yesterday, three days after back-to-back champion University of Santo Tomas had also withdrawn.
Both teams cited studies as reasons for pulling out, saying the players wanted to turn their attention to schooling although La Salle said its team was also unprepared.
"Yes, they (La Salle) will not also join the tournament," said Palou, also Ateneo’s representative to the UAAP board, in a phone interview.
"They (La Salle) said they are not ready and competitive enough to play this conference," Palou said. ""They also said they (Archers) will focus on their academic needs."
The Lady Archers and the Tigresses are considered the top two squads of the four-year tourney.
The two squads have six titles between them with UST taking the inaugural staging and the second and third conferences of the 4th season while La Salle reigned supreme in three consecutive conferences.
Palou admitted that the league might suffer from the two schools’ absence since both teams have great following, but he said he is optimistic that volleyball fans will still support the remaining teams which are also among the top teams in the country.
"It (UST and La Salle’s absence) may affect the league in terms of viewership, especially those who support both teams," said Palou. "But we believe we have a deep base of support (fans)."
Asked if he was saddened by the recent turn of events, Palou said: "I’m not saddened. I’m disappointed."
"It’s not right na di sumali just because hindi competitive yung team. Choice nila yan and we cannot force them (La Salle and UST). But they should realize that we are doing this to give them more exposure," Palou said.
"We are putting this so they can have more tournaments where they can train for the coming NCAA and UAAP seasons," Palou said.
Earlier, Cesael De los Santos, who temporarily took the coaching chores from UST head coach August Sta. Maria, said the team opted to skip the first conference so that players can attend to their academic needs.
Aside from giving attention to their studies, De los Santos said he expects the time off to help some players recover from injuries.
UAAP Season 70 spiker-of-the-year and UST’s top scorer Mary Jean Balse together with hard-hitting Venus Bernal and Angeli Tabaquero have been hounded by injuries lately.
"Burned-out ang mga players that’s why we are not joining," De los Santos said.
Another reason De los Santos laid out was the team’s intention to prepare early for the coming UAAP Season 71 volleyball tournament which the University of the Philippines will host in December.
With UST and La Salle’s absences, the league will have only six teams. These are San Sebastian College, Ateneo de Manila University, Adamson University, Far Eastern University, Lyceum of the Philippines and debuting College of Saint Benilde.
Two Visayan powerhouse teams, however, could offset the impact of their absence.
Top caliber teams from Visayas — University of San Jose-Recoletos of Cebu and University of St. La Salle of Bacolod — will make their debut in the ultimate stage of the volleyball wars where top squads from UAAP and NCAA strut their wares.

breaking news: ateneo will not be having nurak nokputta for a while tapos ganun din sa ssc, di muna maglalaro si jang bualee.
