Ateneo, Lyceum force sudden death Written by jonas_terrado Friday, May 23, 2008 11:09:00 PM
Ateneo de Manila and Lyceum of the Philippines kept their dreams of making into the finals alive following separate victories in the semifinals of the Shakey’s V-League at The Arena in San Juan last May 23.
The Lady Eagles rallied from a set down to stun elimination round leader San Sebastian College Recoletos, 14-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13, while the Lady Pirates played consistent ball in surprising second placer Adamson University, 25-23, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22.
With all four teams carrying identical 1-1 win-loss records in the single-round robin format, the last playing date of the semis on Sunday will be a virtual sudden death showdown for the two available entries in the best-of-three championship series.
Ateneo and Lyceum will dispute the first finals berth in the 12pm curtain raiser while the Lady Stags and the Lady Falcons clash for the second-and-last ticket at 2pm.
It was a disappointing defeat for Adamson and San Sebastian, who had their chances of arranging a meeting in the finals slipped away. Now, both will have to play against each other in order to make it to the titular series.
Down by a set in the fourth frame, the Michelle Laborte-mentored squad banked on the superb efforts of Thai import Phanusit Em-orn, Kara Acevedo, and Charo Soriano to score the comeback victory.
“Ito na ang best game of the conference ng team,” Laborte said. “Kahit malakas ang San Sebastian, dinaan talaga namin sa teamwork at ginamit nila ang puso at utak para manalo.”
Em-orn, who came in as a replacement for Pu Kanchana at the start of the quarterfinals, tallied 33 points as she scored seven points, including the game-winner, in the deciding set to pull away in the match that lasted two hours.
Meanwhile, Acevedo and Soriano each had 14 markers for the Lady Eagles, who spoiled a 36-point showing by guest player Jaroensri Bualee.
“Sinabi ko lang masangga natin sa Bualee, may pagasa tayong manalo sa kanila,” Laborte added.
Jinni Mondejar put in 15 points for the Lady Stags while Ryza Devanadera and Laurence Ann Latigay made 10 each.
On the other hand, Beverly Boto and Jane Jarin took charge while Dahlia Cruz exploded in the fourth set clincher to lead the Intramuros-based volleybelles to the victory.
Boto made the majority of her team-leading 20 points in the first two sets to surprise the heavily-favored Lady Falcons side, which made the semifinals following a second place finish in the double-round elimination.
“Nagadjust ako sa gameplan nung fourth set dahil nagbago sila (Adamson) ng position sa third set at maganda naman ang resulta,” said Lyceum head coach Emil Lontoc.
A strong third set showing by the San Marcelino-based tossers led by guest player Nerissa Bautista, Angela Benting, and Michelle Segodine extended the contest to a fourth frame but Cruz made seven points, including four midway that put Lyceum up 17-11, as the Lady Pirates never looked back.
Cruz finished with 18 points with Jarin adding 13 markers for LPU. Bautista led the Lady Falcons with 17 points with Segodine and Benting tallying 13 apiece. Sang Laguilles scored a quiet 12 in a losing cause.

I almost fell off my seat reading the news this morning. Not to take anything away from Lyceum and Ateneo, but they win big games on crunch time. Congratulations!

LPU vs. Adamson
First set: Obviously AdU was not on their A game while Lyceum was feeling it. Accdg to the report, after LPU's three set loss to Baste, Coach Lontoc had to increase the intensity of the training covering all aspects of the game. And truly it paved for them - great court coverage and great power plays from Boto and Cruz. There were to excellent digs from Satsatin as well.
On AdU's side, Bautista and Segodine gave bombastic attacks as expected. Gustilo did well as well though she sailed long when given the chance to tie the game. Laguilles was definitely checked while Benting was not in her true form. After a very long exchange, Benting miscalculated a drop to lose the lead to LPU. A good block from Jarin ended the first set in favor for LPU 25-23.

report: adamson is in three leagues now...they had TWO games the day before their game against lyceum and a 7 am game on the same day they played Lyceum.
And they are on the top of the rankings of both competitions...
Yan ang quick report.
Second set: Slow to react and overfatigue. Two words the commentators repeatedly describing the game of Adamson and Lyceum is obviously capitalizing on them. Lesser quick plays and not in their usual great court coverage were among their problems not to mention a lot of serve errors. Laguilles didnt even utilize her jump serve anymore.
Not to take anything away from Lyceum, they gave AdU a dose of their own medicine with great digs and a lot of superb blocks.
I miss the smiles from the AdU girls...

Tiyak babawi ang adU dito BIG TIME.

it was an unpredictable game...nobody expected that adamson will be defeated by lyceum...
na-burn-out masyado ang adamson sa naging laban nila sa iba pang tournaments but still they gave a tough fight...
congratulations to both teams...
