MANILA, Philippines - Ateneo Lady Eagles defeated University of San Jose-Recoletos, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 25-13, on Friday, sweeping their quarterfinal assignments at the Shakey's V-League Season 5 at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Eagles' victory put the Cebuanas in a must-win situation against University of St. La Salle-Bacolod, which in the first game lost to Lyceum of the Philippines University (25-16, 18-25, 25-23, 25-10).
The Lady Eagles thus earned a playoff for the last semifinal spot, according to a league statement issued on Friday.
A victory by the USJ-R against USLS will give the Cebuanas a playoff against Lyceum based on the league's 3-of-5 incentive rule.
As usual, Thai import Em-orn Phanusit and Ma. Rosario Soriano led the Lady Eagles' offense, finishing with 25 and 22 markers, respectively, while their teammates helped in limiting the Cebuanos to 13 points in the fourth set to post their fifth win in the quarterfinals.
Bernadette Satsatin scored 16 hits, while Syvie Artate posted 14 points for the Pirates.
"We made adjustments in our rotation after our second set and we were able to stop USLS utility spiker (Je-an Ledesma)," Lyceum coach Emil Lontoc said.
The defeat was USLS's third against a single win, closing the door to their semis target.
"We failed to recover from those series of errors in the third set. We could've won that set. We failed to regain our rhythm after that," USLS coach Roger Gorayeb said.
