Lady Eagles foil Pirates in Shakey’s V-League opener, SSC wins over CSB (March 31) Source: www.v-league.phAteneo survived Lyceum’s determined stand in the first two sets then asserted its might in the third to complete a 25-23, 29-27, 25-17 victory at the start of the Shakey’s V-League’s fifth season at The Arena in San Juan yesterday. Thai ace Kanchana Jindarat fired away 20 kills and finished with 22 points four days after arriving to backstop the Lady Eagles in their bid for a first-ever crack at the championship after a third-place finish in the last conference. “Our main objective is to make it to the top two. I do trust my players that they can get the job done,” said Ateneo coach Michelle Laborte, who saw action for the Lady Eagles as a guest player last year. Ma. Rosario Soriano provided a solid backup to Jindarat by scoring 17 points, including 13 attacks while holding her own in defense with three blocks. No other Lady Eagle, however, was able to churn out double-digit scores although Laborte is hopeful to draw balanced scoring from her wards in the next few games of the tournament sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and organized by Sports Vision. “Kanchana just arrived last Thursday so they are still trying to adjust to the system,” said Laborte, who drew a combined 17-point output from Denise Acevedo, Patricia Taganas, Misha Quimpo, Karla Bello and Therese Limgenco. The Lady Pirates played with so much guts and resiliency majority of the way with Beverly Boto and Jane Jarin leading the charge. But the Intramuros-based team cracked up after dropping two match points in the first two sets and lost steam in the third. Earlier, Philippine Olympic Committee President Jose Cojuangco Jr., Shakey’s General Manager Vic Gregorio, PSC Commissioner Eric Loretizo and Tournament Director Tony Boy Liao made the ceremonial serves kicking off the three-month long event, backed by Active White skin whitening products, Mail and More, ICT Call Center, MIKASA and ACCEL. Meanwhile, the Ateneo-Lyceum match will be aired on NBN-4 starting at 2 p.m. today with the San Sebastian-St. Benilde clash to be telecast tomorrow. Boto wound up with 18 points, highlighted with 15 kills, while Jarin fired away 11 attacks for a 13-point performance. Bernadette Satsatin, Dahlia Cruz and Jamie Peña each scored six points for Lyceum. Later in the night, fancied San Sebastian used its power and experience to outclass newcomer College of St. Benilde, 25-11, 25-18, 25-23, and match Ateneo’s straight set victory.

Ateneo, San Sebastian VI take Shakey's V-League opener By Theodore P. Jurado ATENEO gave Michelle Laborte a rousing coaching debut as it subdued Lyceum, 25-23, 29-27, 25-17, while San Sebastian College used its experience to overpower newcomer College of Saint Benilde, 25-11, 25-18, 25-23, yesterday at the start of Shakey's V-League first conference at The Arena in San Juan. After fighting nip and tuck with the Lady Pirates in the first two frames, the Lady Eagles buckled down to business in the third set with Thai import Pu Kanchana and skipper Charo Soriano doing the damage. Kanchana poured 20 of her 22 hits from attacks while Soriano added 17 markers for Ateneo, which placed third in the last Shakey's V-League conference. "Our main objective is to make it to the 'Top 2', I do trust my players na kaya naman nila," said Laborte. "May kulang pa kami, dumating lang si Kanchana last Thursday and I'm sure na magkaka-adjust ang mga players as the tournament goes along," she added. Suzanne Roces debuted for the Lady Stags with 14 hits while Lou Ann Latigay contributed 12 markers. San Sebastian, runners-up to University of Santo Tomas last season, showed their might by taking the first set 25-11. The Lady Blazers gallantly fought back in the next two sets, but they could not match the great intensity showed by the Lady Stags in the rematch of their NCAA Season 83 finale. In the second frame, Lyceum open spiker Jane Jarin tied the knot at 27-27, when Kanchana scored a kill for Ateneo to move closer to the set point. The Lady Pirates tried to even up matters but Jarin's hit went outside which gave the Lady Eagles the set point. Kanchana and Soriano were unstoppable in the third frame, as Ateneo took a 19-12 spread and never looked back. Beverly Boto topscored Lyceum with 18 points while Jarin added 13 hits. Lady Tams open bid vs Blazers in Shakey’s V-LeagueSource: www.v-league.phGames today 2 p.m. - Lyceum vs Adamson 4 p.m. - St. Benilde vs FEU Far Eastern U gets the chance to show its stuff after its title run in the UAAP as it plays St. Benilde while Adamson battles Lyceum at resumption of women’s volleyball action in the Shakey’s V-League fifth season at The Arena in San Juan today. The Lady Tams nipped the Falcons in a thrilling sudden death in their best-of-three series to capture the UAAP crown recently and are raring to flaunt their form in the country’s premier volley league against the Blazers at 4 p.m. St. Benilde dropped a straight-set setback to fancied San Sebastian, 25-11, 25-18, 25-23, in Sunday’s opener but the Blazers are expected to come out stronger from their losing debut on a team built around Doreen Sanchez, Katty Kwan, Giza Yumang and guest player Lilet Mabbayad. Veteran Rachel Ann Daquis will not suit up for FEU today but the Lady Tams remain the favorites with Anna Camille Abanto, Rose Ann Taganas and Wendy Ann Semana expected to lead the team’s charge in the tournament sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and organized by Sports Vision. “We will try to do with what we have. At the same time, I’ll give my other role players the chance to shine,” said FEU coach Nes Pamilar. Adamson is also slightly fancied over Lyceum in the 2 p.m. clash with guest player Neriza Bautista backing up the already formidable squad that includes Jacqueline So, Rissa Jane Laguilles, Janet Serafica, Angela Benting and Michelle Segodine. Lyceum also dropped a straight-set loss to Ateneo Sunday but the Lady Pirates battled the Lady Eagles through two tough sets of highly charged volley action before succumbing in the third, 25-23, 29-27, 25-17. Meanwhile, the Adamson-Lyceum clash will be telecast on NBN-4 starting at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) while the FEU-St. Benilde game will be aired on Thursday. The league is backed by Active White skin whitening products, Mail and More, ICT Call Center, Mikasa and Accel.

Kakalabas lang niyan. 10 minutes pa lang yan nakapost sa v-league.ph. Nakalagay diyan na maglalaro si Semana. Ewan ko, pero tingin ko talaga maglalaro siya. Hehe. Let us analyze the statement given sa teledyaryo kanina. Hehe. Yun lang talaga ang opinion ko. Hehe.

I watched the games last Sunday and I must say that SSC has really improved a lot. Sobrang lakas na pumalo ni Latigay at Devanadera at nagru-running spike na din si Devanadera. Ok naman si Jinni sa open pero masyadong clinical ung laro nya kaya madaling i-check. Su Roces of course is such an additional force also. I think with the absence of its nemesis UST, SSC will finally get this one. Let's see if Adamson will step up and give them fight for the crown.

2 p.m. – Ateneo vs St. Benilde 4 p.m. – San Sebastian vs Lyceum
MANILA, Philippines - Adamson University dominated Lyceum of the Philippines University (25-17, 25-23, 25-18) on Tuesday in its debut at the Shakey's V-League Season 5 at The Arena in San Juan City.
According to a V-League statement issued on Tuesday, guest player Neriza Bautista played true to her potential and came away with 14 points, including 12 kills, while Rissa Jane Laguilles backed her up with 10 attacks for a 13-point performance to key the Lady Falcons' victory.
They were actually outscored by the Lady Pirates tandem of Beverly Boto and Dahlia Cruz, who combined for 29 points, but the Lady Falcons duo drew enough support from Michelle Segodine and Angela Benting, who each had nine points, and Jacqueline So and Janet Serafica, who chipped in seven points between themselves.
"They somewhat relaxed in the second set but gave their best in the third where they showed their true form," Adamson coach Dulce Pante said in Filipino.
The Lady Falcons, who lost a tough three-setter to Far Eastern University in th recent UAAP women's volley final, also made seven service points, scored four on blocks, and translated the Pirates' errors to 23 points to gain the victory in one hour and five minutes.
The setback was Lyceum's second straight after dropping a 25-23, 29-27, 25-17 loss to Ateneo de Manila University in Sunday's opener. - GMANews.TV

V-League: Lady Tams ram past Lady Blazers in 5 sets 04/01/2008 | 11:05 PM
MANILA, Philippines – The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws flirted with disaster but recovered in time to escape with a scary victory (25-17, 24-26, 21-25, 25-18, 15-9) victory over a stubborn College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers side in Tuesday's second game at the Shakey's V-League Season 5 at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Lady Tams sorely missing the services of its three former stalwarts, so they had to lean on Irish Morada, Mary Rose Cabanag, and Cherry Vivas to avert what could've been a humiliating setback for a new team in the league. The troika put in a combined output of 53 points.
"We're still adjusting following the loss of Rachel Daquis, Wendy Semana, and Josephine Cafranca, who helped power the team to the UAAP title win last month," FEU coach Nes Pamilar said in Filipino.
The Lady Blazers fell to a 0-2 win-loss card in the rankings. - GMANews.TV
