Shakey’s V-League has come of age
Friday, March 28, 2008
Just four years into women’s volleyball, Sports Vision and Shakey’s Pizza are enjoying a remarkable run in transforming a fledgling league into a certified crowd-drawer. The formula is simple: Good games equal good product.
The recent UAAP finals between FEU and Adamson drew huge crowds even without popular schools like UST and De La Salle. In fact, many fans had to be turned away because they could no longer be accommodated inside The Arena in San Juan.
The unprecedented turnout was a first in the UAAP with every volleyball enthusiast noting the great job done by the organizing Sports Vision and Shakey’s in putting up the Shakey’s V-League that the once dormant sport in the Philippines has truly benefited from the league.
“Aside from brand awareness and social contribution, our purpose in sponsoring the Shakey’s V-League is that we’d like to give back to the people what the market has done for Shakey’s for more than 30 years now,” said Vic Gregorio, Shakey’s general manager. “In fact, last year, we were awarded the most outstanding Filipino franchise in food category. The popularity of the brand cannot be denied and yes we admit that the V-League has helped the brand.”
The upcoming fifth season of the Shakey’s V-League on March 30, which caps the International Women’s Month, promises to be another blockbuster with eight teams, including two provincial squads, clashing for top honors in what has now considered as the country’s premier women’s volley league.
Expected to grace the affair starting at 1 p.m. are Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco, and San Juan City Mayor J.V. Ejercito with Bituin Escalante to sing the national anthem.
Recognizing their contribution to the sport, the prestigious Philippine Sportswriters Association cited the league in 2006.
“We are very happy with our partnership with Sports Vision because of all the wonderful results of the Shakey’s V-League. As such, I have decided to enter into a “contract in perpetuity” with them that for as long as Sports Vision would like to undertake the V-League, then Shakey’s will always be there for them,” said Leo Prieto Jr., chairman of the International Family Food Services Inc. and Shakey’s Pizza.
To give the tournament a mainstream appeal and keep the fans updated with the goings-on in the league, the men behind it also put up a website (www.v-league.ph), which remarkably generated more than 6,000 unique visits during off-season months, reaching up to more than 40,000 visits last conference alone and 500,000 page views.
The league also continues to come up with innovations as two topnotch teams from the south – University of San Jose Recoletos and University of St. La Salle-Bacolod – have been invited to the upcoming tournament.

Blockbuster 5th season seen for Shakey’s V-League spacer
Just four years into women’s volleyball, Sports Vision and Shakey’s Pizza are enjoying a remarkable run in transforming a fledgling league into a certified crowd-drawer.
The formula is simple: Good games equal good product.
The recent UAAP finals between FEU and Adamson drew huge crowds even without popular schools like UST and De La Salle. In fact, many fans had to be turned away because they could no longer be accommodated inside The Arena in San Juan.

Expected to grace the affair starting at 1 p.m. are Philippine Olympic Committee President Jose "Peping" Cojuangco, and San City Mayor J.V. Ejercito, himself a big fan of volleyball with Bituin Escalante to sing the national anthem.
The Shakey’s V-League, offered a breakthrough in the sport of volleyball - men or women - in that all games are telecast 7 days a week, the only sporting event that does this.
Recognizing their contribution to the sport, the prestigious Philippine Sportswriters Association cited the league in 2006. The event also draws tremendous support from the covering media with newspaper clippings in last year’s second conference generating a staggering total measurement of 119,210 column centimeters broken down into 70,701 for the eliminations, 30,602 for the semifinals and 17,907 for the finals.
"We are very happy with our partnership with Sports Vision because of all the wonderful results of the Shakey’s V-League. As such, I have decided to enter into a ‘contract in perpetuity’ with them that for as long as Sports Vision would like to undertake the V-League, then Shakey’s will always be there for them," said Leo Prieto, Jr., chairman of the International Family Food Services Inc. and Shakey’s Pizza.

Prior to the above, in 2005, Sports Vision has put up an short international series featuring top caliber club team from Thailand and the national teams of Indonesia and Myanmar to help in the preparation and honing up of the national volley team to the SEA Games.

dianne's already playing with feu during the first ever v-league, alongside with rovira, semana, manalo, cafranca ,etc. although they were not in the top, she's the counterpart of gonzalez/cafranca.
